To spend £70 on a Christmas downie cover?

Quite fancy http://m.marksandspencer.com/mt/www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-digital-snow-forest-print-bedding-set/p/p22324478 from M&S but think it might be a waste of money Grin. Thinking if I got us one and my 3 children similar Christmassy themes (2 with double beds) then I'd be spending hundreds.

A special duvet cover just for Christmas?? How very NetMums! Grin

treaclesoda · 07/11/2014 05:33

I've never heard the term downie before, but I think it's quite nice actually, sounds cosy!

Like a previous poster mentioned, as a child I knew them as a 'continental quilt' Grin I suspect this makes me middle aged!

nooka · 07/11/2014 05:42

I don't like the look of that duvet cover much (and what's wrong with asking what a word you've not come across before means?). But I quite like the idea of a very snuggly winter duvet cover, in lovely bright Christmas colours. We use a flannel sheet on the bed when it gets really cold, a flannel duvet cover would be lovely and snuggly.

JessieMcJessie · 07/11/2014 05:56

Nooka the post contained a link to the item so no need to ask what the poster meant by "downie cover" unless it was to have a dig at her vocabulary!

LightastheBreeze · 07/11/2014 06:07

I'd get the M&S ones in the sale for next year if they are still there after Christmas, I always get the Christmas stuff in the sale.

nooka · 07/11/2014 06:15

When I clicked the link it didn't have any pictures, except for some reason a cushion. But really I just don't get why that post was interpreted as a dig. A downie might be a special kind of duvet cover after all, what's wrong with asking?

siblingrevelryagain · 07/11/2014 06:35

I've just bought a similar themed but much nicer brushed cotton set from bhs for £30-it's the same grey/white forest theme but has a stag on-it's really lovely and might make it doable for the whole family to have one.

When I'm on the computer I'll link to it (or just search their website; bedding or Xmas depts I guess)

WD41 · 07/11/2014 07:51

I've never heard of the term downie / does that mean I'm arrogantly Anglo centric too?

Or maybe people just haven't heard it. Don't be ridiculous Jessie trying to insinuate some kind of anti Scotland feeling where there is none

OwlCapone · 07/11/2014 07:54

"Downie" is Scottish for "duvet". Try not to be so arrogantly anglo-centric in your posts, eh?

PMSL. OTT reaction, much?

FWIW, I have bog all idea what a downie is and can't see anything in the links given.

Gawjushun · 07/11/2014 13:27

I didn't know you could get special duvet covers for Xmas. Better add them to the list along with festive pyjamas, jumpers, and toilet seat covers.

YANBU to spend your money however you want though.

SmiteTheeWithThunderbolts · 07/11/2014 13:45

I like it but it makes me feel cold just looking at it. And really it's a winter duvet cover, not just Christmas.

IsItMeOr · 07/11/2014 15:00

Gawjshun Toilet seat covers, you say?

M&S have Christmas bath mats [helpful].

poolomoomon · 07/11/2014 15:39

Well it's not my taste either but to each their own. It does have the added benefit of not really being a Christmas duvet cover per se, more a winter one so could use it until around March Grin. Too expensive though, as someone else said you'll be gutted when you see its price in the sales.

Can't think of anywhere ethical that sells them cheaper... The anorak stag one is nice and a bit cheaper!

itsmeitscathy · 07/11/2014 22:46

I'm scottish....i call it a continental quilt...

Fabulous46 · 07/11/2014 22:56

I'm Scottish and I call it a duvet cover. My gran called it a downie as hers was filled with feathers (according to my mother).

BobbyDazzler1 · 07/11/2014 22:59

Why do mums think it matters if they like the bedding or not?! What's that got to do with anything?

OP, if you like this and you can afford it, then YANBU!

Buy and enjoy! Stuff what others think!

(You're the only ones who are going to see it at the end of the day).

At least we not talking matching Christmas jumpers or something - such a hideous concept Wink

Jill2015 · 07/11/2014 23:24

Same here. Continental quilt, creak Grin. Love the word 'downie', it sounds cosy and comforting.
OP, I'd probably wait for the sale, tbh.

LightastheBreeze · 08/11/2014 05:52

The BHS one is lovely as siblingrevelryagain says, I saw it yesterday, it is as nice as the M & S ones.

Gullygirl · 08/11/2014 06:20

www.target.com.au/p/santa-friends-quilt-cover-set/745676_nocolour

It's a lot nicer than this one I saw yesterday!

Nospringflower · 08/11/2014 09:11

PS I am scottish and in Scotland so blame that for me calling them duvets. Do remember them being called continental quilts too!

OP posts:
Nospringflower · 08/11/2014 09:12

That was meant to be a PS to a message saying that target one is particularly hideous!

If I could find nice, cheap ones that would be perfect as want to buy for my 3 children too and M&S ones would be about £250!

OP posts:
Janethegirl · 08/11/2014 09:33

If you like it and can afford it, go buy it. Not my taste though Smile

wanttosinglikemarycoughlan · 08/11/2014 09:41

I love it
I would spend that much if it had a high thread count and was going to feel gorgeous
