i was watching homes under the hammer this morning and a studio flat in aldgate when done up was worth £380000 omg how do people in central london afford to buy houses or flats when what is basically a bedsit is worth that much money, i live in yorkshire and the prices round here are on average between £60000 to £100000

I love London, but 'umitigated joy' is putting it a bit high, don't you think? Limitedperiod's remark is funny, but also somewhat rude and patronising.

Last time I looked Covent Garden and Leicester Square were in London zone 1, so where is the 'real' London, somewhere at the end of the Northern line?

Elporto would you like to give us your definition of an "actual Londoner"?

Limitedperiod - funniest post I've read all week :)
And no more rude a post than those blithely posting that all Londoners are rude and grabby. Whilst the rest of the UK is populated by what..angels?

That is a very accurate summation of my personality mscheddarandrioja. If I had a medal, I'd give it to you.

Thanks LadyRabbit elportodelgato and MillionPramMiles.

I'm sure that you three, like me, are tired by people piling in on these threads to hate Londoners.

Some have always lived here. Some, like me, moved from a suburb close by. Some moved from other parts of Britain and many others moved here from all over the world.

What's wrong with that? I thought that the received MN wisdom is that we like migrants. Or is that just migrants born in other countries?

Do tell.

I live in Zone 1. I'm not going to reveal any more about my location because no one needs to know.

I came here a little over 20 years ago from a close suburb. It was perspicacity on DH's part to spot a shabby area that would increase in value. It has. So shoot us.

He was born a couple of hundred miles away but realised that the best chance for work was in London. He had been renting a shared flat in Zone 1/2 at the time - Earls Court. He could never have afforded that now on his wage and that's the thing that Londoner-haters miss in their spite.

I live in Central London. It has increasingly been taken over by money-launderers from abroad and to a lesser extent, cheap buy-to-letters with large inheritances who've watched Homes Under The Hammer.

Sorry to everyone who wants to buy into the fantasy, but Central London is not, and should not, be the preserve of people who want to hide their money.

The various parts were a neighbourhood.

Unfortunately, London has become the money-laundering capital of the world.
