To think that LARC should be promoted more?

I know that it already is to some extent and that HCPs have to make people aware of alternative methods of contraception if someone wants to go on the pill but I'm still not sure if there's really enough awareness out there.

LARC is more reliable than the pill and has less chance of failing which would help prevent unplanned pregnancies. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone falling pregnant on the implant for instance (when fitted correctly) however I know lots of people who fell pregnant on the pill.

Most people do seem to default to the pill when choosing contraception and there are still lots of people who are wary about trying LARC. Even though LARC often has fewer side effects than the pill.

I really do think there needs to be an even bigger push towards LARC, especially towards teenagers who might find it hard to remember to take a pill every day.

It's promoted and talked about loads! Are you in the UK?

My body hates hormones, after 18 months of the implant I was ready to carve it out of my arm with a rusty spoon! Side effects were horrid for me. My SIL needed a laparoscopy after her coil went walkabouts, and a couple of others I know got pregnant with it, that put me off that particular LARC.

Not sure why you think young people are unreliable at taking the pill. I managed perfectly well on the pill in my teens and early twenties, may have forgotten one or two but I did my research and knew what to do in those instances. If anything, my short term memory was much better then than now after 2 babies! I think most young people are capable of being responsible.

In short, I firmly believe that information is out there if you are looking for it, and there are a lot of different methods of contraception available, what suits one may be a disaster for someone else.

DH just had a vasectomy as he has had enough of seeing me crying in pain and bleeding half to death.

I know several people who's implants have been damaged after a fall or strong knock to the arm and ended up pregnant!! I also know someone who is pregnant on the mirena coil!

nothing is infallible

Let women make their own informed choices.

LARCs get promoted plenty IMO and IME - you cannot ram them down people's throats* who don't want them. AND they don't agree with everybody.

*aware that the throat is not where LARC's go

I am now imagining Pacific fitting a coil orally on a bemused patient.... Wink
