Why are toothpaste and shaving blades so fucking expensive?!!

Why? WHY? On a budget, Pro Namel is nearly 5. Everywhere! Cannot buy replacement Venus blades as they're nearly 10.
I always spend an eon looking for a good deal and never find one. I prefer pro namel as it seems to be the only paste that makes my teeth feel clean but end up with a cheaper option. Don't understand it.
Rant over...

I never pay more than a £1 for a tube of toothpaste and usually less than that. Yes Razors can be expensive but I've used a battery one for years. So don't buy them now.

Sallyingforth · 05/11/2014 16:43

Pronamel was on offer at Sainsbury's at the weekend - 2 for £5.

MackerelOfFact · 05/11/2014 16:49

There's no need to spend £5 on toothpaste, cheaper stuff will work just as well. Dentist DP uses £1 tubes of Colgate and whichever Oral B manual brushes are on offer in the supermarket (and refuses to pay more than £2!)

Shaving blades are pricey I agree, but disposable Bic-type ones are pretty cheap and they do the same job. I find with the Venus etc ones, it's usually worth just replacing the handle rather than buying refills, as the handles with 2 heads included are always on offer and often work out cheaper.

Madamecastafiore · 05/11/2014 16:52

Try your local pound shop.

kissmethere · 05/11/2014 17:03

I'll see if the Sainsbury offer is still on thanks.
Just don't understand the sky high prices.
Let's not talk about sanitary products!

Superdrug has aquafresh for £1. Or try the 99p/pound shops.
I bought a ladyshaver for £15, it does the job for me, and I shave all year round due to swimming.

Tauriel1 · 05/11/2014 18:10

I get Arm and Hammer toothpaste from pound shop or Wilko and it works really well.

ASDA own brand razors that are lilac colour are cheap but never cut me.

Passthecake30 · 05/11/2014 18:16

I use venus blades, think I got them on Amazon last, but I rarely change them- maybe every few months? Likewise, dp used to change his blade more frequently and doesn't now. I've heard if you run the blade over denim it sharpens up?

I use colgate but like the sensation and whitening ones - 2 for £3 usually

kissmethere · 05/11/2014 18:56

Yes the mach 3 ones last ages. I'll have to put dd in the know of not to use once and throw away as they're fooking expensive. I'll have to designate her a portion, how bloody ridiculous eh!

poundland.

most brands of toothpaste there.

and if I want to shave legs/wherever I use mens disposables, theyre much cheaper and do a better job.

BedPig2013 · 05/11/2014 20:10

My friend recently recommended Gillette Venus disposable razors to me and they're really good, not the cheapest disposable razors you can buy buy they never cut my legs and they're much cheaper than refills.
For tooth paste we get colgate from home bargains, usually less than a pound

BikeRunSki · 05/11/2014 20:14

Tesco value toothpaste- 29p
Orange Bic razors - about £2 for a massive bag

Seems to suit me, but I am very low maintenance.

willowisp · 05/11/2014 20:20

I think use your epilady & don't spend ANYTHING on razors & buy a pack of interdent brushes - those things that floss/brush between your teeth & your teeth will feel lovely & clean with the cheapest toothpaste you can fine.

FWIW my teeth never feel clean with ProEnamel...it's just weird stuff.

willowisp · 05/11/2014 20:21

A big NO to disposable BICS. Doesn't anyone care about landfill ?! Sad

Feckbloodypets · 05/11/2014 21:32

Mach 3 heads in wilkos's are really cheap and I am sure they fit the venus handle
But I don't know for sure as we all in this house just use 1 handle and have our own packs of blades which works great with the hairy husband how only shaves certain bits when he feels like it, a 13 year old sporting full Italian stubble and a lazy cow that only shaves when I have to get my legs out to play rugby xx

NormaStits · 06/11/2014 00:09

Use MySupermarket to help find deals. It doesn't compare all shops but the main supermarkets plus boots & super drug are on there.

catseyes10 · 06/11/2014 00:19

I must be a bit of a teeth cleaning freak, one tube lasts about a week and a bit?? And that's just me & dh, kids have their own tube. Razors are essential, well ok I know I have a shaving fetish I can't help it they are expensive but worth it.

Nohootingchickenssleeping · 06/11/2014 00:35

Poundland or Poundworld. £4 in Asda, £1 in Poundworld for the same toothpastes. Stock up.

80sMum · 06/11/2014 01:03

I agree, razor blades are ridiculously expensive nowadays. There was a time when they were in tiny paper packets, 5 in a pack, and you got just the blades, no plastic. The razor was a simple device that had a handle that unscrewed, enabling you to change the blade. Each blade cost only a few pence.

forago · 06/11/2014 01:10

I agree with you about the razor blades - they're ludicrously expensive!

But I get my Aqua fresh toothpaste for a pound which I think is ok

poshfrock · 06/11/2014 04:41

Colgate is 50p in Poundstretcher.

Charlesroi · 06/11/2014 07:25

OH doesn't 'do' cheap razors but likes the Lidl one. A handle plus 15 blades for about £5 and that will last him 6 months minimum. I use cheap disposables and probably get through one a month, so a £1 bag lasts for ages.

muphys · 06/11/2014 07:44

Dh uses the Mach 3 but I only ever buy them when they are on offer, then I get a few and they do last quite a long time. I use disposable razors, and not even these fancy pink girl ones. I don't think there is any difference except for a strip of aloe vera or whatever on the razor, which I cant see the point of it you use soap or shaving gel or even conditioner, and the fact that the handle is bigger (why is this??) and they are pink or green.

Stupidhead · 06/11/2014 07:56

I use Mach 3 - I'm so hard! I buy them when they have the multipacks for £20 in Superdrug.

Handy hint (I skim read so sorry if this has been mentioned) a razor that seems dull can be sharpened again. Use the bottom of a mug - the circle where the glaze isn't on - and stroke the razor over it a few times, up NOT down! It should see you out for another couple of legs or more.

differentnameforthis · 06/11/2014 08:03

I must be a bit of a teeth cleaning freak, one tube lasts about a week and a bit?? A full adult tube is this? Bloody hell! How much do you use? You need a pea sized blob, that's all. Any more & you are either swallowing it or spitting it out.

Total waste!
