To ask how much slim people eat in a day?

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/11/2014 19:32

I know this is an odd question, but bear with me! I used to be a normal healthy weight when I was young, but over the years my BMI crept up to 30. I've been battling with my weight for the past few years, and have managed to wrestle my BMI down to 27. But I've yo-yo-ing up and down for a while, and I think I've lost sight of what a normal daily food intake looks like.

My worry is that if I manage to get down to a BMI of 23 or 24, with a reasonable amount of activity per day, how will I manage to sustain it long term? I know how to eat healthily, but I also like the odd takeaway, wine and occasional junk food. I suspect that slim people maybe just don't eat that much? Except for the few with high metabolisms of course.

So, it would be really helpful for some slim people in their 30's, 40's, or older, to give me a quick example of their daily diet. Thanks in advance!

I'm a size 10. Today i have had a poor diet due to being at uni all day. I've had jaffa cakes and a bar of chocolate for breakfast, soup mid morning, chicken and chips for lunch and then just had chicken and chips for dinner because i'm too knackered to make myself anything and i need to write up some reports.

InSpace

Stop calling yourself names-imagine saying that to your friendShock

Seriously-eating well is about being good to yourself, not slagging yourself off and punishing yourself.

You are a healthy eater.

Iamblossom · 04/11/2014 20:43

I would class myself as reasonably slim. Am a size 10 below, size 12 above, 5 foot 4', 39, around 9 stone 3.

I have porridge and a banana, or whloemeal toast and egg for breakfast

Egg or mackerel/tuna salad for lunch, 0% Greek yoghurt with sunflower seeds

Almonds for snack

Bolognese sauce with Greek veg, or salmon with veg, or steak/chops/sausages with veg. Don't eat carbs after lunch time.

I drink loads of water and try and exercise intensively for an hour, three times a week. I don't eat any sugar.

I never get ill, have great skin and hair.

I drink too much though....Sad

Artandco · 04/11/2014 20:45

I'm size 8 ( sometimes 6), about 8 stone.

Never dieted but I think main things are:

  • always active. On normal day I wake up and apart from to eat i don't sit down again until 8/9pm. Just busy I suppose
  • I don't eat bread
  • I don't snack
  • very little processed food

As idea of diet today I ate:

Breakfast - porridge with almond milk, with stewed apple and pear ontop

Lunch - chicken, rice, peas, broccoli. All chopped and mixed together

Dinner - steak with Stilton and mushroom sauce, mash and asparagus

georgieporgie1 · 04/11/2014 20:45

Age 39, 5'2, always been 8 1/4 stone or so, except when losing weight after having children. I personally never drink alcohol (don't like it), also don't like cream and don't eat sweets, so some things are easy I suppose. But I love chocolate and crisps, and cake.
So.. a typical day
Breakfast - tea, 2 chocolate biscuits
Snack - choc chip brioche
Lunch - cheese salad sandwich, crisps, apple, couple of squares of chocolate, tea
Snack - small choc bar eg penguin, or small slice of cake (about half what you get served in coffee shops), tea
Dinner - roasts, fish chips peas, pasta red sauce meat veg, etc
Snack - tea, biscuit

Personally I have found that if I want to lose weight I have to cut down from that, and it's all about food, not exercise, which seems to have no effect at all. If I replace the snacks with fruit ones, that's the only change I need to make, (and make sure the crisps are Quavers or Skips and not Hula Hoops/Walkers). However, once it's lost, it's easy to keep off through exercise. But it may be different for others, I don't know.

I just read upthread that slim people stop eating when they are full. does that mean that some people carry on eating after they are full? that sounds a really uncomfortable thing to do.

sorry if that sounds condescending, but it's not something I can relate to, although it's fascinating!

georgieporgie1 · 04/11/2014 20:47

Also yes of course have takeaways, but maybe have a rule that you have to lose what you put on from the last one before you have the next one! I used to have this rule after Christmas to lose the temporary gain there, and it seemed to work!

Bartlebee · 04/11/2014 20:48

I am slim.

I have eaten today -

a scrambled egg with black tea

a wrap with ham and cheese

2 small packets of hula hoops

an oven baked salmon fillet with a baked red pepper

large glass of wine.

I have run for an hour and clocked up 13,000 steps on the FitBit.

I find I can eat what I want because I exercise.

bananaramadramallama · 04/11/2014 20:50

Sothisishowitfeels and Inspace That's exactly what I'm going through at the moment too.

I'm on a weight loss group program thing prescribed by the Dr, and I have to stick to 1138 calories per day to lose 2lbs per week. We had to start food diaries, but carry on eating the same as we usually would - I found that my natural daily appetite hovers around 1800 - 2100 calories, which has me firmly on maintenance rather than weight loss.

It's only in the last year that I've put on a vast amount due to illness, but over 18 years or so I stayed pretty much a constant size with no effort (apart from pregnancy).
I really believe that once I've shifted the 4 / 5 stone I need to get rid of, I'll be able to maintain easily - it's the getting there that will be a challenge!

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/11/2014 20:50

That's useful georgie I agree

OP posts:
georgieporgie1 · 04/11/2014 20:53

Oh, and I weigh pasta and rice, otherwise end up with enormous portions on my plate and a stomach-ache as I just can't judge it!

Tiredemma · 04/11/2014 20:53

I am 4ft 11 and currently 62kg- My BMI is 27.5. Im desperately trying to lose weight and get fit- my current presentation depresses me.

I really have to watch what I eat as I tend to accumulate fat everywhere and look hideous (dumpy).

Between jan and may of this year I did 5.2 and exercised every day (20/30 mins). I went down to 57kg and was happy with how I was starting to look.

Im going to try again but I seem to crave crap. I second the poster who commented about exercise. If I dnt exercise I dont lose weight

AllBoxedUp · 04/11/2014 20:55

I'm not slim! I'm really interested in how little the slim people on here snack. I think it's the snacks that undo me - in fact I know it is. When I've used My Fitness Pal in the past on some days nearly half my calories are consumed between meals .

TalkinPeace · 04/11/2014 20:58

You need to stay within your individual TDEE
( calculator here thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/ )
which varies with your height, weight, activity level and AGE
TDEE drops by about 5% per decade of age

So, on a normal (non fast day as I do 5:2)
Breakfast = pint of tea
Lunch = Pint of tea, single slice sandwich with mayo and cold meat and fruit
Supper = anything I like but stop when full
No booze on weekdays, no snacks EVER, I do not have a sweet tooth

You need to work out your TDEE for your happy weight and stay within that averaged over the week

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/11/2014 20:58

Seems like slim people don't constantly dip into the biscuit tin all day. [shocked]

bedraggledmumoftwo · 04/11/2014 20:58

Just thought i would add my stats- just did an online bmi calculator and its 20.2! I am 5ft 8, now down to 9 st 7, was 10 st 11 post baby after eating all the cakes! Was aiming for 10st3 but weight has just kept dropping off, although i am not sticking very rigourously to the slimming world thing.
i like to do green days as i find it hard to feel full on red (meat) days, and haven't got my head around the new plan. So generally i have;
either rice pudding, made with 1%milk and sweetener, or weetabix, or beans on toast, and scrambled eggs/ veggie sausages for breakfast.
Lunch: pasta/rice/couscous or jacket and beans, plus loads of fruit and a muller light.
dinner, spag bol ( or chili or curry etc) made with half low fat and half quorn mince. Green day means carbs are free and you only get c.100g of protein free. By mixing beef and quorn and adding loads of veg it is easy to do a massive plateful with that though.

syns, i just ate a Cadbury fruit and nut. At the weekend i will have wine, and if i want a snack in the day ( or after the wine!) i have caramel snack a jacks or velvet crunch low fat crisps!

I suppose I'm slim - size 10-12 and 5'10. Though I'd like to lose a bit and be a solid 10.

Today:

Breakfast: none. But we had Halloween sweets at work so I had a handful to put me on. Bad.

Lunch: chicken and udon noodles from a pret-type place. I always buy there as it does good veg portions and is the perfect portion size for me.

Supper: half a bowl of home-made mushroom soup and a few spoons of quinoa with tomato. In fact, DS' leftovers.

I also had 3 cans of diet coke and a couple of coffees. Usually my eating is better than this- breakfast is scrambled eggs with toast (late to work today so didn't have time) and supper is meat and veg. I'll also have a couple of glasses of wine. Don't exercise - currently trying to walk more/take the stairs.

Honestly I think I stay slim because I eat too little even though I am pretty sedentary. It's not sustainable in the long term and does nag at me. I'd rather eat more and move more! I remember before DS, I went to a great gym 4 times per week, had a ton of energy and ate consistently, plus was slimmer.

Basically, I don't know the secret! Move well eat well I guess?

bedraggledmumoftwo · 04/11/2014 21:00

It was the biscuit tin that put me a stone and a half higher than this!

AllBoxedUp · 04/11/2014 21:01

I know it shouldn't be but I find it surprising when I see people listing what they eat and there are no snacks - I first of all think they must have forgotten to list them. I know that's why I weigh more than I want to be but it's so ingrained. I'm giving myself a free pass until I stop breast feeding though......

Aherdofmims · 04/11/2014 21:03

I am size 10 and 5'6" so consider myself slim.

I eat a lot - as much as anyone I know including men - but almost nothing processed. We always cook from scratch and I try to have something more healthy rather than a sandwich if I am out at work.

Like another poster I can't eat more when I am full. I suppose I eat frequently rather than a lot in one go.

I lose weight when I am busy - work, childcare etc - and don't have a sedantry job although not hugely physical.

Mominatrix · 04/11/2014 21:03

I think these threads do pup up frequently. People are slim because they manage to equilibrate input and output.

I have never been heavy. I am short (5'2") and slim (size 4-6)

Breakfast: Large cup of coffee with a bit of milk, homemade sourdough spelt and flaxseed bagel with butter and jam on one size and egg on the other

Lunch: Vegetables and rice noodles in a spicy coconut broth

Snack: tea and 2 speechless biscuits

Dinner: chorizo and fish stew, and some sourdough olive bread. Small portion of cacao (raw cocoa) pot de creme. one glass of champagne

However, I am quite active, and my phone says that I did 20,375 (17,168 average) steps which seems to translate into running/walking 16.58 (14.12 average) km. Just noticed the pedometer stuff, and it was really eye opening.

Mominatrix · 04/11/2014 21:04

speculoos, not speechless (stupid PT!)

buffythemuffinslayer · 04/11/2014 21:04

allboxed - I think snacking is time related? I am a natural snacker but 90% of my day is back to back meetings - just don't have the time. Left to my own devices I'll eat every hour.

You're breastfeeding, snacks are your right!
