I dunno if it's me or not so really appreciate your feedback!

I stay with a particular family run hotel for work sometimes and have spent thousands with them over the last 5 years.

On my last stay I stupidly left a dress hanging in the wardrobe. Totally my scatty fault. I contacted them and they said that they have it, so I asked if they would send it back to me and I would of course cover the postage. To cut a long story short they are saying that they will not take to the post office but I can arrange a collection to be delivered to me. If I use a courier service that require them to print a label out it will cost me £3. They are saying that they don't want to print a label, they want me to use one of 3 couriers they have mentioned and it will cost me £12. (And they don't have to print a label.)

I know that it's my fault and if I left something there it's my responsibility to pay to have it returned, but I can't help but think that their response shows a lack of goodwill considering the amount time and money I've spent with them? I left one of my children's books at a hotel we stayed at for a week once and the lovely woman who ran it posted it back to me before I'd even realised it was missing! To be honest the dress only cost £30 so it's a bit annoying to have to pay a third of its value to have it returned - in fact I'm not even sure if I can be bothered to spend that much to get it back, I'm just a bit miffed at myself for having forgotten it in the first place.

So are they being tight or am I being entitled? Grin

I work in a Hotel and I'm always at the post office returning things, we do ask for the postage fee though.

I left a pair of jeans at a Premier Inn a few years ago, they posted them back to me free of charge.

taxi4ballet · 04/11/2014 18:44

Butlins returned dd's coat free of charge a few years ago.

Got my necklace back from Travelodge Bingley a few years ago, posted free of charge.

I really hope the manager IS a MNer!

The hotel is being tight and short sighted. A few years ago I left a pair of shoes in a hotel. I called and asked them to post them the cheapest way possible, I wasn't in a rush. They were very nice on the phone and said no problem. Shoes arrived two days later and I found they had charged £65 to my card for a courier. Still annoys me to think of it.

Tight and about to lose a customer.

I left a jumper in a restaurant we went to for a quick set menu lunch probably £15 altogether. I phoned and they posted it back. The next time we were in the area we arranged a meeting of various friends and family for dinner - 22 altogether all having 3 courses and wine / beer. Guess where we went.

They remembered me and the jumper too - a year later :)

Very tight.

The Hotel we stayed in a few weeks ago in Cyprus found dd's beloved Humf after we'd left, and sent him home recorded delivery. He was home 5 days after us and she was absolutely thrilled.

I also left rave reviews all over the internet.

If you stay there a lot though, could you not just pick it up next time?

I work at a family run budget hotel and in that situation we would either ask you to send a prepaid envelope and then post it back to you, or we would charge you postage +VAT. So I think that they're being a bit tight.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 05/11/2014 08:59

Glad they're co-operating. I left a pillow at a family run B&B in the Summer and the owner posted it back to me straight away.

Ratbaggity · 05/11/2014 09:50

I run a small B&B and wouldn't dream of charging to send guest's property back to them - we've returned shoes, clothes, mobiles, ipods, hearing aid! countless chargers, jewellery.

I just wish the guests who 'accidentally' pack our hairdryers/mugs etc would be equally accommodating about sending them back..... Grin

My son left a soft toy in spain once and the appartment owner posted it back free of charge.

I left some clothes in a guest house in this country once and they posted back standard parcels (less than £3) and I reimbursed them on paypal.,

The hotel are being tight. I would tell them. It surely won't hurt them to pop to the post office at some point especially if there is no hurry. And yes Trip Advisor (once you have sorted it).

In the alternative if you go regularly, could they hang on to it until you are in the area? Even if you don't give them your custom again.
