...to think we'll soon be swamped with statues?

Every week there's another statue(or stone/plaque/other) unveiled to somebody good or to mark a memorable thing, but I've never seen or heard about any statues being taken away. They tend to be quite solid, long-lasting things, so won't the country end up knee deep in these things eventually? I know some get nicked for scrap but they generally get replaced on principle.

I think it's a very, very slow disaster happening. People should stop worrying about immigrants and start worrying about statues.

That's more of less what happened at my university when the Mandela bar was renamed Rolf's, EvilTiggy. I guess they're renamed it now though.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 03/11/2014 16:03

My son thought Nelson Mandela in parliament square was Lord Sugar.

I was going to reply that the Classical statues were standard enough to allow that, which wasn't the case these days... but after tge next dew posts, maybe many statues are as generic as ever!

pluCaChange · 03/11/2014 16:09

"the next few posts"

Sorry, chisel-fingers! Grin

Sometimes statues do get removed though, usually when people are really not happy with who they represent any more.

There used to be loads of statues of Lenin in the USSR but people thought a bit differently after it broke up. And there was the Saddam statue toppling in Baghdad that made the international news. There was a statue of mummy saville in a shopping centre in glasgow that was removed.

I didn't know he had been mummified! Ugh. Shock

Oh heck, the stones with eyes in Marianne Dreams scared me rigid as a kid.

I do like the modern statues which are in "normal" poses, e.g. sitting on a bench and you can sit next to them.

Shockers · 03/11/2014 22:26

I find the OP tasteless in the extreme considering what happened to dear Eric just the other week on Morecambe prom...

'Taken away' was exactly what happened.

Poor Eric Sad

He didn't go far though, being bronze n'all, he was a bit heavy to be carried off by just one drunken twerp with a chainsaw

NorksAreMessy · 03/11/2014 22:28

I seem to have stumbled onto aMarianne Dreams collective.
I genuinely thought I was the only person who had ever read this.

I still can't eat roast chicken and peas without thinking of her birthday meal

NorksAreMessy · 03/11/2014 22:29

As for the old statues...they just stand them up in bus shelters in Morecambe...nobody has noticed yet Grin

NorksAreMessy · 03/11/2014 22:31

Now that was odd. I had NOT seen the post about Morecambe before I wrote mine, and now my 'joke' is even less funny...try again

"As for old statues, they just stand them up in bus shelters in Eastbourne, nobody has noticed" Grin

Better?

There's a statue park in Budapest called memento park which has all the communist era statues. A truly amazing, surreal experience seeing these massive propaganda statues. Go visit. We should have one here.

AliceLidl · 04/11/2014 07:56

Can we keep these plaques OP?

Are they safe? Because this one looks a bit untrustworthy to me.

I like that one, Alice!

Marianne Dreams is one of the scariest books ever written (still not quite as bad as The Owl Service, but not far off) Add to that Blink, and a DD who has a phobia of what she calls 'freaky fake people' (statues, mannequins, anything that isn't quite human) and we're royally buggered.

I am quite fond of this statue but haven't, for obvious reasons, pointed it out to DD.
