Toaster argument!

Me & DH are at a stand off. I have agreed to put the dilemma to the MN jury without bias...

One of us was having some toast this morning and found that it popped up after only a minute, the dial having been turned down to 1 by the other party yesterday for a product that only needed light toasting. This person is unimpressed and feels that the dial should have been moved back to it's normal toasting zone (no. 3) after being used last time. Said toast is now only slightly toasted and it will be difficult to achieve a perfect browning.

The dial-turner feels that there are several different products that may be toasted other than toast, and that when you pop your toast down you should first check what number you are toasting on, and that to ask the other party to adjust it twice each time they toast something different is ridiculous.

Who IBU? The person who thinks the dial should be returned to 3 after each toasting, or the person who thinks you should set it to your preference when you toast??

God it's hard being impartial Grin

Lol...new person making toast should check but in real life its not going to happen. Who after making toast will remember to put the dial back to 3. I love these pointless arguments....

londonrach · 01/11/2014 14:31

Hate dh when he moves my car seat and mirrors. Takes ages to get it right. If we having this discussion can i throw the putting the toilet seat up out there. Grin

bobs123 · 01/11/2014 14:38

Erm...isn't the point in having a DH is having someone to bicker about such trivialities with? Plus you get the making up afterwards Blush

Otherwise...

  1. ditch the toaster
  2. ditch the DH
  3. get a 4 slice toaster and have 2 slots each

NO.
There's a universal law about toilets.
The seat and lid are there for a reason and it's not to decorate the front of the cistern! Grin

MrsJossNaylor · 01/11/2014 14:45

It should be turned back!

Even worse though, is my DM who turns the kettle off at the plug. EVERY TIME, I'm flummoxed as to why, after 10 mins, it hasn't boiled. Gaaaah.

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 01/11/2014 14:53

You put it under the grill and keep an eye on it.

addictedtobass · 01/11/2014 15:01

Actually I'd say it should be both to make sure it's done. The old user should return, the new user should check.

Thewrongmans · 01/11/2014 15:35

The dial should be checked each time, however I never follow this 'rule' and get very very annoyed at the warm bread that is produced because DH has moved the dial.

MangoBiscuit · 01/11/2014 17:04

Just to even out the vote from our house, I asked DH too. He was utterly puzzled by the question to start with and wanted to know why you wouldn't just check the dial. So I put it across that if it's usually on one setting, and someone needed to move it to toast something different, then wouldn't it be their responsibility to put the dial back? His response was "WTF? No! If you're making toast, you check the dial" then wandered off shaking his head. The head shake was probably more for me asking him odd questions, than about the odd idea that you should reset a toaster, but it still made me chuckle. Grin

TooMuchCantBreathe · 01/11/2014 17:18

Surely the dial stays in one position and anything needing less toasting gets manually popped at the desired moment?

Nessalina · 01/11/2014 18:50

TooMuch - but that's crazy! What's the point of having a dial at all if you just ignore it and pop stuff up at random? To be fair, this is what my PILs do, and it drives me mental because they hover by the toaster watching it like a hawk to pop it when it's done and I'm like 'um, have you thought about turning it down and letting the automated labour saving process that exists do it's job??'

Mango - I appreciate the gender specific testing! Grin

TooMuchCantBreathe · 01/11/2014 18:58

Grin that would be far too simple! Although I should confess I never make toast so it's the dc hovering. It never occurred to me to introduce them to the dial Blush

Hassled · 01/11/2014 19:02

I expect the toaster dial to be at 3, and if someone's tweaked it then I blame them for cocking up my toast.
I also expect the iron to be on Max, and if someone's tweaked it then I blame them for cocking up my ironing.
However, and non-sensically, I don't expect the microwave dial to be anywhere in particular and don't go apportioning blame if it's been changed.

FishWithABicycle · 01/11/2014 19:05

YA both BU for having an argument about this and caring enough to consult MN. There are obviously deeper relationship issues and you should LTB.

CokeFan · 01/11/2014 19:13

I think it should definitely be turned back to the "usual" setting. We only ever own cheap toasters - setting 1 = barely warm bread, setting 2 = charcoal so once you've got the setting just right you can't move it anyway.

PILs always turn the toaster off at the socket (leave the kettle though) for some reason. Last time they completely foxed me though - not only did they do the turning off thing but also turned the dial down to zero so when I'd switched it back on the bread STILL didn't toast.

DrCarolineTodd · 01/11/2014 19:41

Put it back in for the required time and then get a grip?

windchime · 01/11/2014 19:44

First world problem. As per.

WowWowSauce · 01/11/2014 20:40

Clearly, everyone involved in BU. You should always warm your toaster up first, and then you would notice that it popped up at the wrong time.

And the people who unplug things and leave you staring blankly first thing in the morning! There's a section of hell waiting for them, where everything is hardwired to the walls. Everything

vanessalightyear · 01/11/2014 20:54

This thread is making me want toast A LOT

Hatespiders · 01/11/2014 20:55

Check the dial first before use.

Do not waste time arguing about a blooming toaster. Pick a really good subject to row about. (loo seat up/down? Socks inside out in laundry basket?Surreptitious nose-picking while watching tv?)

I caught my seal-point Siamese cat ( a very highly-strung nervous chap) thoughtfully spraying wee all over our toaster. It had to be thrown out. (not the cat, the toaster) Position of dial a minor matter.

cherrybombxo · 01/11/2014 21:06

It should be turned back if you change it. DP always cranks it up and leaves it Angry

Nessalina · 01/11/2014 21:10

My DH is astounded that our ridiculous debate has got over 70 responses! Grin

OP posts:
pictish · 01/11/2014 21:10

I think it's down to the person currently toasting to check the dial is at the right setting for their own toasting needs.

It is easy to pop it back down and do a 4.

TooMuchCantBreathe · 01/11/2014 22:11

One Of the great things about mn is we know What's important Wink
