you can't possibly call a meal junk food if it had all of your 5 a day!

So a few weeks ago we had a play date that went well. Friend just what's capped me asking for advice for a meal tonight. I said recently that this went down well and is super healthy:

Baked beans, one of your 5 a day
Fish fingers, good source of ohmega and protein
Frozen sweet corn and peas, frozen has more nutrients.

Pudding frozen bananas whipped up into ice cream with a little chcoclate sauce and chopped dates.

Said friend called meal a bit to junky. I thought it was really healthy...

Are FishFingers flash fried? Does it say that on the packet? Even if its true, which I doubt, there is still a lot more fat in a salmon fillet than in a fish finger.

MonsoonInBelize · 02/11/2014 23:10

Better like I said, it could be the crappy fish scrapings from the floor for all you know, bit like MRM (mechanically recovered meat) in some pies etc. You just cannot tell me that that is better than a simple fillet of salmon.

I buy them from Aldi btw, so just over £2 for 2. Not exactly lobster prices Confused

Artandco · 02/11/2014 23:10

It's - that's mad. How can carbs in a chocolate bar = carbs in brown rice?

Mominatrix · 02/11/2014 23:11

Ummm - don't you know that all fats are not equal? The fats in Salmon and tuna (and any oily fish) is the omega 3 kind which is necessary for optimum neurological and cardiovascular health. White fish used to make fish fingers do not contain the same levels.

MonsoonInBelize · 02/11/2014 23:11

I give up if people truly believe that given the choice fishfingers are healthier than freshly cooked salmon fillet and brown rice.

MonsoonInBelize · 02/11/2014 23:12

Mominatrix I think we are possibly wasting a precious Sunday evening here!

itsbetterthanabox · 02/11/2014 23:14

I'm sure it's possible to buy/make fish fingers that don't use mrm fish. So if you know it isn't that..

MonsoonInBelize · 02/11/2014 23:14

Salmon is an oily fish, cod isn't. Much better for you.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 02/11/2014 23:15

Oh come on we call no frozen fish fingers are a bit shit. Tasty and convenient, but a bit shit.

Mominatrix · 02/11/2014 23:16

Itsbetter : you can't really not know that all carbs are not equal? The carbs in an ordinary chocolate bar come from sugar (or whatever glucose/fructose derivative is cheapest). Quick release and are metabolised differently than slow release carbs which usually have some fibrous element to slow absorption. One is highly dangerous, the other one is fine for most people.

itsbetterthanabox · 02/11/2014 23:16

No one said healthier at any point.
But a similar balanced meal. I do think there is snobbery going on here.

Bakeoffcakes · 02/11/2014 23:17

I do know that they aren't equal. I also don't like to eat too much farmed salmon, as there have been many reports of it not being particularly healthy, containing too much mercury amongst other things.

I expect the fish finger fish has had a much healthier and happier life. I'd much rather get my healthy fats from other sources.

Mominatrix · 02/11/2014 23:17

Agree Monsoon. Sad thing is that so many people are similarly misinformed, and refuse to get properly educated.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 02/11/2014 23:18

I've never been in an actual fishmongers. That's terrible! So baby steps, I want to make my own finger things, I'll call them goujons... is it haddock?

itsbetterthanabox · 02/11/2014 23:18

Mom yes I do know that but when eaten in a meal that has a lot of fibre in it already then breadcrumbs are rice won't be that different.
Pure sugar is obviously different.

itsbetterthanabox · 02/11/2014 23:20

How bizarre to make sarcy comment about but not to people right here..

Fish finger fishes I'd say, who knows how many fish are mashed together into one. Like cheap sausages. There's really no argument is there? Fresh fish is better than fish fingers...

I don't even 'do' fish and I know that!

Mominatrix · 02/11/2014 23:21

Mercury levels increase in fish as one goes up the food chain. Mackerel is much lower down so lower Mercury - plus cheap bad quite easy to get fresh here.

Bakeoffcakes · 02/11/2014 23:22

Who's Bill DixieGrin

Artandco · 02/11/2014 23:22

Just looked online at ingredients. A fishfingers has loads in! Some brands up to 40 different ingredients in one fishfinger! A well known fishfinger brand has rapeseed oil, palm oil and sunflower oil all added

ghostyslovesheep · 02/11/2014 23:23

so many people are similarly misinformed, and refuse to get properly educated waaahahahahahaha Grin Grin brilliant

MonsoonInBelize · 02/11/2014 23:23

I'm not being a snob, I've said I think fishfingers are fine now and then. My argument if there is one, is that one is better for you than the other. As I said, I use free range eggs in the rice and peas plus we have broccoli and carrots with it. I figure that's a pretty healthy meal. Why on earth would I want to substitute brown rice for some crappy filler Confused.

Toomanyhouseguests · 02/11/2014 23:23

Yes salmon, kale and brown rice would be even better, but my kids would never have eaten it! (Maybe the Salmon, but they only like wild, sockeye salmon, and I am not made of money!)

It seems to me that the kids got 3 of their five a day in one meal, which is great. Fish is low in calories and fat so that sort of evens out the naughtiness of the breading in my mind. They got plenty of fibre and protien as well as vitamins and some carbs. Personally, I'd be happy with it.

I am sure it's not what Gwenyth Paltrow feeds her brood, but I think it's absolutely fine and your friend was a little unkind to call it junky.

whatever5 · 02/11/2014 23:23

I prefer salmon to white fish but that doesn't mean I would want to eat it all the time. It is more important (and more interesting) to eat a variety of foods surely? The snobbery on here is ridiculous.
