you can't possibly call a meal junk food if it had all of your 5 a day!

So a few weeks ago we had a play date that went well. Friend just what's capped me asking for advice for a meal tonight. I said recently that this went down well and is super healthy:

Baked beans, one of your 5 a day
Fish fingers, good source of ohmega and protein
Frozen sweet corn and peas, frozen has more nutrients.

Pudding frozen bananas whipped up into ice cream with a little chcoclate sauce and chopped dates.

Said friend called meal a bit to junky. I thought it was really healthy...

Pifflingcodswollop · 01/11/2014 21:02

Ok actually I have just realised you meant whipped up frozen banana to be like ice cream rather than frozen banana with ice cream so yes all fine then to me and my apple pie comparison makes no sense, but has now made me want apple pie, dammit.

Camolips · 01/11/2014 21:02

There's a lot of people belittling the op

Tanaqui · 01/11/2014 21:05

Ffs didn't the op say the "ice cream" was just frozen banana? With dates fgs, and a tiny bit if choc sauce? Insanely healthy play date pudding!

o0 · 01/11/2014 21:09

Stealth, I was just making the point that the humour maybe wasn't as funny when it's aimed at you.

I don't want you or anyone else to be upset or see my posts as a telling off. I'd always rather comment on a thread than run off to report. Gotta at least play fair and give you a chance to tell me how I'm wrong. Wink

Stealthpolarbear · 01/11/2014 21:11

Ok fine. I'm not upset btw, just fairly confident that my own ridiculous posts about cows and stuffed quinoa will also not have driven anyone else to tears.

JollyCrumbs · 01/11/2014 21:23

In our house this would be on the less virtuous end of the scale. Processed food is generally classed as junk here. We do eat it, but we are aware that it's not very healthy and try to have more home made stuff and keep food like fish fingers for days when we're really short of time.

arethereanyleftatall · 01/11/2014 21:28

Same in my house jollycrumbs.
Seems we're not allowed to admit that though on this thread without either being told we're smug, or having the piss ripped for having the audacity to feed our children well.

Stealthpolarbear · 01/11/2014 21:34

I personally have no problem with that. My children don't get an ideal diet and that is a source of shame on my part. But peas are not a vegetable? Contain 'too many' carbs? Bananas are junk? I do think that sort of thing is odd - either competitive perfect parenting or people applying their adult faddy diet obsessions onto children.

Bakeoffcakes · 01/11/2014 21:36

I don't think you're smug arethey and Jolly. I just think you are wrong.

"Junk food" which is defined as a processed food with little or no nutritional value.

Fish fingers, as described by the OP, cannot be classed as such.

Artandco · 01/11/2014 21:41

Surely giving children in general the best food possible is most peoples goal? Same as giving them best education possible, best loving environment possible, best everything?

FoodieToo · 01/11/2014 21:41

Dates, banana, peas and sweet corn - healthy in my opinion.

Fish fingers and beans not so much, but fine when balanced out by the 4 fruit/ veg.

It's all about balance( see Gnome in Ben and Holly ).

pauline6703 · 01/11/2014 21:41

I was intrigued by the mention of frozen bananas. I love bananas but they often go black and inedible before we eat them all. Can I freeze bananas and if so how?

LilMissSunshine9 · 01/11/2014 21:44

If this thread is a tiny percentage of the no-processed food eaters than this might be the real reason Tescos profit has fallen Grin just joking of course!

KatoPotato · 01/11/2014 21:56

Freeze chopped banana then just pulse in the blender, you need to keep pushing back down and pulsing again. Add a wee bit of cocoa powder and peanut butter! (Optional)

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/11/2014 22:03

Yes ArtnCo, but to me, the best food is a healthy love of all food if possible.
Dd (13) and I ate out tonight, we had deep fried food, fish, shellfish, offal amongst other things.
We ate a tasting menu without knowing what we'd be served earlier this year, we loved it, last night she ate loads of sweets that she got trick or treating, tomorrow is homemade chestnut and mushroom pie.
Food is food is food, it serves many purposes, and enjoyment is one of them, as is indulgence.
Neither of us are, or have ever been overweight btw.

Thank god we've moved on to swapping recipes Grin!

KatoPotato · 01/11/2014 22:07

Here's a recipe for a treat meal the kids will love!

you can't possibly call a meal junk food if it had all of your 5 a day!
Blu · 01/11/2014 22:08

In what sense is a fish finger, made from fish, breadcrumbs, natural colour and spices 'not healthy'? When grilled?

KatoPotato · 01/11/2014 22:09

I made them myself with locally sourced cod, hand milled bread, crumbed and toasted, and flash frozen and stored in a box I doodled on

Stealthpolarbear · 01/11/2014 22:10

Kato that's not loaded for me but I'm guessing munch box?
How are you doing btw?

TheBigBumTheory · 01/11/2014 22:12

I have never thought of buying breadcrumbs, and have not noticed them in a supermarket. I do make my own by whizzing up bits of left over bread which would otherwise end up in the bin. Then I freeze them. I make my own bread in a breadmaker mainly because it's cheaper (we eat a loaf a day) also it tastes better and it had less salt and sugar in it. It means I don't have to shop for fresh bread or try to fit loaves into the freezer. It takes the same time as boiling a kettle once you are used to it. And it smells lovely.

I expect that makes me smug.

I would never buy fish fingers mainly because I'd need average of four each for six people and that would seem a lot.

KatoPotato · 01/11/2014 22:12

Haha!! It's the cpn' Birdseye himself!

I'm good! 12week scan on Monday and currently eating for Britain!!!

Stealthpolarbear · 01/11/2014 22:16

Good for you, if there's ever a time to eat what your body needs, this is it :)
Stupid question of the week - I never freeze breadcrumbs despite the fact it'd make life much easier as I usually want to freeze whatever I'm breadcrumbing. Do other people not worry about that?

TheBigBumTheory · 01/11/2014 22:17

Are you worried about re freezing them? That is no problem.

grocklebox · 01/11/2014 22:19

You're not having the piss ripped out of you for feeding your children well, but because you don't actually know what well is! You don't know what junk is, you don't know what processed is....you THINK you do, and you are largely wrong.
And thats why you're being laughed at for your smugness. Because you're just plain ill-informed. And judging others by faulty standards.
