To ask any single parents on around £21k a year to tell me what benefits they get?

Sorry I'm a bit desperate.

Single mum, 2 kids. Work full time, earn £21,500 a year. Own house.

Entitled to reckons I'd still get around £130 a WEEK in child benefit and child tax credits?? Surely this can't be right? If so I'm financially better off single ...

My kids are not his kids. I do get maintenance from my own ex though which I know isn't included in benefit calculations.
I do get child benefit at the moment but like everything else it just gets sunk into the black hole joint account.

I'd rather be worse off in a small house with one car and in control if my own money than theoretically 'minted' but constantly skint and unhappy.

Ok, well, it sounds bloody awful but you have the beginnings of a plan.

Have you started to prepare documents, open your own bank account, etc? Have you seen a solicitor for your free advice session?

Good luck.

CalamitouslyWrong · 31/10/2014 10:28

That probably makes it simpler.

You'll almost certainly be better off when your bank account no longer resembles a black hole, regardless how much money is in it. You'll be able to budget and make informed decisions about your spending.

FeckOffHeadache · 31/10/2014 10:30

It's £21 before tax. I bring home roughly £1500 a month after tax and pension etc

So according to the entitled to website I'd get around £1500 in wages and a further £600 in child Ben, tax credits and maintenance

Defo something going wrong with your husband spending the money... Bloody hell we only bring in your income before tax and we are both working (dh is in fact working 2 jobs one full and one part time and I'm working part time) we only get 40 a week with one child and I wouldn't say we are struggling with money... We have a very strict budget for everything and we still manage to save a bit each month after all the bills car etc have been taken care of!

MassaAttack · 31/10/2014 10:48

I'm in a not dissimilar position, op. I'm rather looking forward to the smaller house etc (although I'll be renting). We'll also have control of the remote every night. Small things Wink

So your total before tax income is £56500 but you think you would somehow be better on £27760?

And somehow it seems to be the fault of single parents you and your partner are 'skint'.

Snatchoo · 31/10/2014 13:22

Wtf are you reading sashh?

That's not what OP is saying at all Confused
