To reserve a parking space outside my house with bins - if someone drives into them, am I liable?

Hi, this is my first post, and I'm well aware that I do not have a right to park outside the front of house, but I am one of a few people in my street who reserves a parking space outside their house with bins.

Generally, this is fine, and most people respect it, but what would happen if someone came round the corner (I am at the end of my street) and drove into them, and it caused damage to their car?

Am I liable for any damage? And if so, why wouldn't this be the case if they drove into my parked car (if it was there instead of the bins)?

Also, is it actually illegal to put my bins on the road in this manner? I can't see anything online about it.

Although I live on a bit of a blind corner where you should really slow down, especially in case children are in the street, but some people drive round the corner like they're practicing for the Indy 500, so I'm still concerned someone might hit the bin.

Thanks.

YABU.

AnyoneforTurps · 30/10/2014 18:14

Is this a public highway, maintained by public taxes? Then drivers have a right to park there (provided no yellow lines etc) and YABVU . If you want a house with private parking, move to one with off-street parking or a garage.

WorraLiberty · 30/10/2014 18:15

And if your bins happen to belong to your council, they're not going to be happy to find them in the road either.

Yabu!

I work for a highway authority and you are not allowed to place anything in the highway, you would be at fault if a vehicle collided with your bin. Many local authorities also fine residents who put bins out on a non bin day. I would advise you stop this straight away as you have no parking rights.

theposterformallyknownas · 30/10/2014 18:22

You are liable as you are blocking the road.
Your council will publish the times in which your wheelie bins should be removed from the front.
Ours are before 7pm of the day they have been emptied. After this you can be fined, irrespective of parking problems.

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 30/10/2014 18:23

Yabvu. Don't leave your bins in the road. What on earth makes you think this is okay?

ADishBestEatenCold · 30/10/2014 18:25

Hi Bingate ... brave first post! Grin

Do you have some sort of preserved right to a parking space in front of your house? I believe some designated parking spaces can be on property deeds.

If not, (dangers and liability aside) why do you think it's okay to prevent someone from parking upon an unrestricted stretch of road?

scurryfunge · 30/10/2014 18:26

Op, look for other solutions instead - dropped kerb? Ask for permit parking? You don't need to be inconsiderate.

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 30/10/2014 18:26

Also, if you are on a bit of a blind bend it probably isn't safe to park there either.

LIZS · 30/10/2014 18:30

Obstruction and presumably the bins are unlit , unlike say a skip or a vehicle with reflective lights and number plate.

Spotsonmydots · 30/10/2014 18:32

This is potentially an unlit obstruction.

You should be looking for other alternatives for parking. This is not the solution

MonanaGellar · 30/10/2014 18:34

Yes. Brave "first" post...

I kind of hope someone does hit these bins and get money out of you :)

maggiethemagpie · 30/10/2014 18:37

Why do you think the bit of road outside your house belongs to you? It does not belong to you, it belongs to the council.

Where I live, I like to park outside my house but if I can't because someone else got there first, I don't make a big song and dance about it. I just accept it and find somewhere else to park.

ChasedByBees · 30/10/2014 18:39

I really really hate selfish idiots who think they have a right to do this. We all have to share and compromise in life but for some reason, the bin wielding road hoggers think this shouldn't apply to them. You make society that little bit worse OP.

ArkhamOffett · 30/10/2014 18:40

I'd pull over a safe way up, get out and move your bins if I wanted to park there.

kslatts · 30/10/2014 18:48

YABVU

If I wanted to park in your road and your bins were in the way, I would move them onto the pavement and park there anyway, in fact I might even do that if there were other spaces just to annoy you.

youareallbonkers · 30/10/2014 18:58

Surely you can't park within so many feet of a corner?

Billben · 30/10/2014 19:16

You must have some very tolerant neighbours OP. No way would you be able to get away with your selfish behaviour if you lived near me. I would be moving your bins left right and centre every chance I got just to wind you up;)

Carrierpenguin · 30/10/2014 20:23

Yabu. If I lived in your road I'd move the bins to somewhere safe, maybe a mile away Grin then I'd park in the space.

ChelsyHandy · 30/10/2014 20:32

Its a public road fgs! You don't have any right to park there. What do you think if everyone did that?

This has to be made up. No-one could be that selfish, nor get away without being prosecuted by their local authority or something!

LittleBairn · 30/10/2014 20:37

When your bins aren't illegally blocking the road where do you put them?

Surely others will just stop put the bins onto the pavement then park?

Andrewofgg · 30/10/2014 20:38

I just put the bins on the pavement and park. One of these days I'm going to get a chain and a padlock and lock them to the selfish arse's fence.

Fiddlerontheroof · 30/10/2014 20:42

I am the person who always moves the bins/cones and parks....I don't get what makes you so special...I have lived in a property with very difficult parking...and I know it's frustrating....but it's incredibly selfish.
