To think this is disappointing? Job interview

I'm actively job hunting, and I came across a job that I'm qualified for, would match and would love to do. (It's low level retail management, not store manager or even deputy)

Anyway I filled out the application form, submitted, and an hour later got a call to ask me to an assessment. Fantastic so far.

Problem is, is that its two trains and a taxi ride away. I've conservatively costed it at nearly £70, to attend an assessment (not interview). No expenses.

I literally can't afford this. AIBU to feel disappointed and a little pissed off by this?

Yanbu to be dissapointed, but probably a little ur to be pissed off

I've seen on here before about a fund some employers have to help them with £ to get to an interview? I'm sure someone will come along and explain as I have no idea

Also, would you be able to afford to get there for the first month? I assume the interview is at the place of work, might be more of a consideration..

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/10/2014 19:00

Are you currently claiming jsa?

You could ask if there's anything you can claim go help with travel costs?

Alot of places seem to do this now and often it's a waste of time :( depending on how some test goes you have missed out before you have even been interviewed

AlpacaYourThings · 29/10/2014 19:01

Some companies reimburse travel expenses for interviews. Have you asked if they do?

MrsPiggie · 29/10/2014 19:01

Would you pay it if it was an interview? Can they hold the assessment and the proper interview on the same day, is that an option you could ask for? It is utterly disappointing to miss out on a prospective job because you can't afford to travel, yanbu.

Happy36 · 29/10/2014 19:02

Really sorry to hear this. Well done for getting the assessment! Can you tell them and see whether they can Skype interview you or give you some expenses or a ride or something? (If they don´t perhaps it would be discriminatory?) Good luck.

When I was job hunting - as a 15 year old for a Saturday job,as a uni student, as a first job hunter as a returner from having children, I attended interviews, if I wanted a job and was given an interview I went, I took the long view that travel costs are part and parcel of the process. I wasn't particularly happy about it (who wants to spend money?) but in the current job market if you think you have a chance of it, I'd suck it up (borrow from a friend? if you can to get there)

I just hope £ 70 per day isn't your regular daily commute cost if you get the job .

LongDistanceLove · 29/10/2014 19:06

Jsa could be a whole different thread to be honest (there's sanctions, there's anger, there's frustration. It could be an epic novel)

I suppose the pissed off comes from no mention in the application that long travel would be involved in the interview process.

There has to be other options.
National Express?
Local buses?
Advertise on FB etc for a lift for petrol and expenses. Surely a friend or family member would oblige?

LongDistanceLove · 29/10/2014 19:13

I hadn't thought of national express :) thank you.

I haven't had to job hunt for 5 years, it's changed so much.

If you are not in work at the moment (job seeker) you should be able to get financial help. The way my local place explained it was if the journey is over an hour away. This was in Hampshire where I often need to take two buses but don't qualify for help whereas when I was in London I was asked if I wanted help to buy an oyster card!!! Mind you that was a few year ago - may have changed.

velourvoyageur · 29/10/2014 19:22

try blablacar I think it's called. I've done it twice and it was perfect.

Purplepoodle · 29/10/2014 19:22

I would be ringing them back and explaining that unfortunately you would live to come but can't afford the travel costs but if they have assessments closer you would loved to be considered

CurlyhairedAssassin · 29/10/2014 19:22

Could you tell us the name of the company?

Lauren83 · 29/10/2014 19:23

My company holds interviews in London sometimes and we have candidates travel to interview in London from Manchester where I am (retail management) and they will happily cover a £200 train ticket for someone to attend

GreenPetal94 · 29/10/2014 19:53

We would pay travel costs to interview with my company. We had a policy of only paying them if asked, we did not write it on the job advert. Train from south of England to Scotland was paid on one occasion.
