To be excited about my new soup maker?

needastrongone · 29/10/2014 14:04

It arrived today, happy days!

If I am not BU, then I am at the very least being middle-aged Smile

Or have an extremely uninteresting life to be this excited...

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I've never quite seen the point in a soup maker. I make soup in a pan and then blitz it with the hand blender. I don't know what else a soup maker does. Perhaps you cold enlighten me.

could

alemci · 29/10/2014 14:16

sounds great, keep us posted.

Titsalinabumsquash · 29/10/2014 14:20

I have one and it's awesome, it's made it to my permanent worktop gadgets rather than being abandoned to the cupboard to gather dust like the waffle maker

I use it mist days in winter and I no longer have left over veg going limp in the fridge. Smile

EvilTiggyD · 29/10/2014 14:22

I have a saucepan that seems to do the job. I like lumps in my soup.

juneybean · 29/10/2014 14:23

Not middle aged, my 29 year old friend has asked for one for Christmas ;)

skylark2 · 29/10/2014 14:23

Is that the new fancy name for the saucepan or the blender?

I love making soup.

needastrongone · 29/10/2014 14:26

Sorry, was only meant to be light hearted Smile

Being excited about something rather mundane.

Think it does the whole thing in one pot, I don't have a hand blender so was using the food mixer for soup.

Further posts, crossed with mine Smile

Equally middle aged here, because I am now consumed with curiosity about what a soup maker is. I suspect I want one …

EvilTiggyD · 29/10/2014 14:29

It's a food blender that gets hot.

You can also get food blenders with little taps on called "smoothie makers".

EvilTiggyD · 29/10/2014 14:30

I want a "roll eyes" smiley like you get on better other forums.

needastrongone · 29/10/2014 14:33

Great Amazon reviews though Smile

It does non smooth soup too y'know and its quicker than using a pan and it makes smaller batches which is great for me and DS3 otherwise I make a big pan and it goes off or I eat way to much.

It's very handy for when I'm rooting around the fridge, I find a couple of flaccid leeks and a celery and a few bendy carrots, I can chuck them in with a stock cube and some water, press the button and disappear for a few minutes and then I come back to perfectly blended (or not if that's your thing) warm soup. Smile

Roussette · 29/10/2014 15:01

But you can't 'sweat' the veg in it though can you? (which is what I thought you were supposed to do when making soup.) Aren't you just boiling everything and doesn't that take away from the taste?

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/10/2014 15:04

I really cant see the point, and I love kitchen stuff

bigbluestars · 29/10/2014 15:04

"It's very handy for when I'm rooting around the fridge, I find a couple of flaccid leeks and a celery and a few bendy carrots,"

Hold me back.

squoosh · 29/10/2014 15:05

Soup season is a good time of year OP! All hail the winter soups.

The only thing is is that I always start my soup by frying an onion, with these soup makers do you just bung everything in raw with the stock?

dynevoran · 29/10/2014 15:09

My friend has one that was a gift and we laugh quite a lot about it. That said I do love a kitchen gadget. I recently bought a spiralizer which has most certainly changed my life.

19lottie82 · 29/10/2014 15:10

My Mum has one and loves it! She does advise that you have to sautee the onions first tho.

bigbluestars · 29/10/2014 15:11

Soups would not taste the same without frying stuff off first though- that's what gives a great depth of flavour.

Roussette · 29/10/2014 15:12

Exactly my point squoosh. I love homemade soup but the thought of bunging everything in with boiling water is not what I think of as proper homemade soup...

offtoseethewizard64 · 29/10/2014 16:15

Lol Tits I can do "non smooth soup" too - I just don't stick the hand blender in the pan. And if I want to do smaller amounts, I use......... a smaller pan Grin

needastrongone but wouldn't buying a hand blender have been cheaper and taken up less space ...... and it could have been used for other things Hmm

Hope you enjoy a winter filled with delicious soup really.Smile

Titsalinabumsquash · 29/10/2014 17:06

Meh, I find mine handy so ner Wink

For you though OP,

If you're they type to make pulled pork, I can really recommend sticking some in the SM with a drained tin of pinto beans, a drained tin of sweetcorn, a carton of Passata, a squirt of bbq sauce and a dash of chilli sauce and put it on the chunky setting, It makes a lovely Mexican-ish soup that's really nice with tortilla chips and a dollop of sour cream and a squeeze of lime. :)

needastrongone · 29/10/2014 17:20

Thank you tits - the Mexican soup sounds lovely. I like both smooth soups like the one I have made today in the slow cooker (pre-delivery), also chunky veg types and chicken broths.

I would also like to admit to having 3 slow cookers, all of which get used. Smile

I am lucky to not have any space issues.

Sometimes I saute my onions and brown the meat pre chucking in the slow cooker, sometimes I don't. The 'correct' side of my would always err on the side of frying off the onions, but I can't honestly tell the difference.

What is a spiralizer, may I ask? Do I need one?Smile
