to think my Ex has been FULLY WEIRD with his new puppy's name?

We broke up about 10 years ago, and the break-up was horrible, both very sad, but lucky for me I met DH Grin. He met a girl but called off the engagement and has just had on/off things since.

We had a dog and both me & ex adored it. When we broke up I got the dog. The dog has a very unusual name - think Barabas or GodSpeedulus or similar Randominus.

Anyway, just seen on Facebook that he's bought a new puppy, same breed - and called it the same name.

Totally, utterly weird.

AIBU to think this is just too weird?

Oh, I thought you were going to say that he named it after you!

ArabellaTarantella · 28/10/2014 22:15

No, I don't think it's weird. You both adored the original dog and your Ex is just replacing him in his affections. Nothing strange at all.

SundaeGirl · 28/10/2014 22:16

But Randominus 1 is still alive. And hangs out with mutual friends.

I thought that he'd named it after you as well Grin

My FIL has had many dogs over the years, one after another. They've all had the same name Confused

Alchemist · 28/10/2014 22:17

Do you love The House of the Spirits too? Grin

Catsmamma · 28/10/2014 22:17

no, some people do call all family dogs the same name...our neighbours are on Sooki3 i think.

I'd say it's a little odd, but not too weird.

cherrybombxo · 28/10/2014 22:19

I really think that's weird Confused

Alchemist · 28/10/2014 22:19

"Barabas came to us by sea..."

OttiliaVonBCup · 28/10/2014 22:19

People do that?
Recycle the name?

I could not do it. Name goes with the dog.

WooWooOwl · 28/10/2014 22:20

It would be weird if he'd named the dog the same unusual and random name that you and your new DP had called your own new puppy, which is what I thought you were going to say.

But it's not weird for him to name his new dog after a dog he once adored and then lost. Unless he regularly dog sits for you, in which case it's would be a bit silly, but still not weird in the way you seem to mean.

Bakeoffcakes · 28/10/2014 22:21

My PIL have had 3 dogs since I've known them (26 years). They have all been called the same name. I think it's weird, but it is a "thing" I've been told.
They are farmers, does that explain it? Is your ex a farmer?

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 28/10/2014 22:24

DH's family had 3 dogs with the same name. When we got our dog he wanted to carry on the tradition - it's a boring bog standard dogs name. I put my foot down. The other 3 were long gone though, it would have been weird if they'd still been alive!

SundaeGirl · 28/10/2014 22:25

Yeah, I know people who name their pets the same thing - Whitey One, Whitey Two etc

OP posts:
SundaeGirl · 28/10/2014 22:30

Nope, not a farmer. And no history of previously repeated names either. Just darn weird.

Canyouforgiveher · 28/10/2014 22:31

I think it is kind of weird that 10 years on you are following him on facebook and worrying about what he calls his puppy. I think you kind of want him to be unusually (weirdly) interested in you and your past. Why not just let go of him and his girl and his dogs and their names.

My neighbour has a dog called Scotty. he has had a dog called Scotty for more than 60 years. All his dogs are called Scotty. It is a bit like the king is dead long live the king.

TheWhispersOfTheGods · 28/10/2014 22:31

Every farmer i know has the same name for dogs - its always in the region of Old Joe and the pup is Young Joe, then when Old Joe dies/is retired to townie relative, Young Joe becomes Old Joe, and they get a new pup, called Young Joe.

If he's not a farmer, little weirder. Was the name a 'Thing', from something special? Could just be that he missed his Randominus amd always wanted to have it 'back'?

There are weirder things he could have named it to be fair. Your 3 yo pfb's very distinctive, from your foreign DH's home country, name for instance (then commented 'oh, yeah - but that's a dogs name' to a mutual friend)

saintsandpoets · 28/10/2014 22:33

I know a family on their 5th Bruce. Its about his love for the dog, not you.

NeedABumChangeNotANameChange · 28/10/2014 22:34

It's odd if he still see's the original dog but not so odd if he doesn't.

Floggingmolly · 28/10/2014 22:35

I also think it's weird that ten years later you - 1) know what his dog is called, and 2) give a shit what it's called.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/10/2014 22:41

I think it's horrible. Every dog is different. They have their own personalities. You have so many memories with them. Why the hell would you merge them all into the same name? My dog means so much to me. Why the hell would I give his name to someone else? It would be like naming your children all the same, seriously, that's how freakishly weird I find it. Confused

SundaeGirl · 28/10/2014 22:42

I know what the dog is called because he posted about it on Facebook. We're Facebook friends so I could congratulate him on his engagement a few years back. We have mutual friends. It's all quite grown up.

Or, at least, it was up to now.

OP posts:
SundaeGirl · 28/10/2014 22:43

MsAdorabelle, exactly. Randominus 1 is not a replaceable concept.

Same reason people give same family names to people through generations. My neighbour has only had dogs called scotty. He is the best dog owner I have ever met (I sometimes suspect my own dog would like to defect and might give it a try except Scotty VI hates him). He loves all of them individually but he calls them the same name. it isn't horrible.

SistersOfHearsey · 28/10/2014 22:49

My dad worked in the USA a lot before I was born and my mum's constant companion here in the UK was a German shepherd called Sam. He was old and was sadly put to sleep days before I was born after he went off his legs.
When I was 5 my parents brought home Sam 2, same breed and my best friend in childhood.

I guess I always thought it testament to how much the original Sam was loved.

You didn't share custody? I think the guy just misses his dog or really like the name. Or seriously lacks imagination. I know people who have named children after their dogs, people can be odd.
