To not want any gifts?

Am I?

As Christmas approaches- I want to broach the idea of no adult gifting. Just stuff for the DC cash

My reasons are :

a) I don't need anything. If I did, I would go out and buy it myself
b) I don't want anything. As above.
c) I am very particular. Unless I specify the precise model number of the item I am bound to be disappointed.

d) I am trying to live with less 'stuff'. Am still trying to use up last year's glut of toiletries.

e) I don't want to be asked what I want. Nothing.

DH thinks I am being a drama llama about it. DM and DF think the same. PIL would be upset and not want to leave me out.

We stopped giving to adults years ago - we were too broke.

I'll be honest, we do now exchange a small thing (nearly always a book) with adults who we are actually spending Christmas Day with, and I guess in many families that would be the whole lot and you're back to square one again.

Couldn't agree more, OP.

All I want for Christmas is the gift of fuck all Grin

I love opening presents. As long as I know the person giving me something is able to afford it and hasn't cursed the thought of hunting for something for me. I don't care what I get. I am just grateful for the thought. There is one exception, I expect my husband to cough up in as extravagant manner as he can manage!
I enjoy giving but like to have some idea of what to give. Also, I need it not to be a financial headache. Situations change. My old dad used to say "I do it while I can and when I can't I won't." Children are the exception, oh! How I miss buying children toys etc as now I usually pay for something on a list. That way they get what they want but there is no real excitement on Christmas morning so cherish every Christmas morning with young children.

Could you suggest the adults have a meal out or something instead of buying presents?(that is if you would want to spend additional time with them Wink and can afford the money spent anyway).

I don't have a lot of presents to buy admittedly, just DH, our parents, DH's bro etc but my DM insists I buy my aunt and uncle as they have no family other than one adult child each (who probably don't make much of an effort, and uncle and aunt both divorced so nobody else).
Uncle has no idea what to buy anyone, so gives money (which is fine when you're younger, but basically feels like he is paying us for the gifts we get him now), aunt is quite skint and buys pretty random & useless presents anyway. I'd rather scrap it or have a meal out, but DM insists we buy them something instead so they get 'something'.

Personally, I'm in a similar boat to you- trying to have less stuff, quite particular, etc but I'm always glad of perfume, toiletries etc to see me through the year/alcohol to see me through Xmas.

My DH just said this to me last night! "Tell everyone we know not to buy me anything ever again. No physical objects/articles"!!

Bah humbug Grin

All I want for Christmas is for someone to invent a wine which still tastes delicious but has no alcohol and makes you thinner as you drink it.

Fudgeface123 · 29/10/2014 12:13

O/H and I had an argument about this last night because I said I didn't want his kids to buy me anything as there's nothing I want/need. He had a go at me saying I was selfish as they really, really want to buy me something. I've told them they should just save their money

feelingmellow · 29/10/2014 16:08

I love buying presents. I've just come back from a local shopping centre that is awash with such lovely things.

BreadForBrains · 29/10/2014 22:52

Oh Fudge, how old are they? In the interest of pleasing children I could always think of something I wanted if it made them happy to make me happy!
A scarf, particular chocolate, smellies etc, even if it was tat, just make something up as it really is about the giving. I do know this, but adults spending their money on other adults to me seems, I don't know, not silly at all... I don't know. I'm fussy, can and do buy what I want, when I want it, so when lovely mil and dm ask what I want for Christmas, every year I say "nothing, just get for the dc." Every year, mil gets me vouchers and some nice surprise presents, and dm buys random shite.
Your stepchildren just want to make you smile Smile
