To not kill this spider

For the past couple of weeks there has been a spider on the outside of our bathroom window. Iam 99% sure it is a false widow.

It now has a nest and dsis and dh think we should open the window and kill it and the eggs. The thing is if I keep the window shut it can't get in and I feel terrible about killing it as it has a nest full of babies

Are they really as dangerous as I'm led to believe? Obviously don't want to leave it there if it has the potential to cause great harm but if the risk is small I just can't bear to kill it and its eggs/baby spiders (and I don't even like spiders)

Hoover it up

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 27/10/2014 20:59

Pretty sure a nice lady recently lost a finger due to a bite from a False Widow.

She was a hairdresser too. Needed her fingers...

Edenviolet · 27/10/2014 21:02

I can't do it its on the outside of the window and I have visions of it running up the Hoover/stick/whatever if I did try to get it and then I'd panic and throw myself round the bathroom.

I feel really guilty about the nest though, if it has to go dh will have to do it!

Yabu. It might get in, and bite you or your kids. If it is a biting spider that will hurt. I have been bitten before by a spider and its not nice. Wouldn't want baby false widows running around either tbh. Ugh, spiders are minging...

Comito · 27/10/2014 21:09

Just kill it. Then post a picture of it dead.

I'm afraid I don't really get this whole sentimental thing about not killing spiders, or any other insects.

Mintyy · 27/10/2014 21:10

Can you put a picture up on here?

NorrisCole · 27/10/2014 21:12

A blowtorch/flamethrower is your friend in this situation.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 27/10/2014 21:27

Do it, no percy!

Edenviolet · 27/10/2014 21:27

Will have to get a pic in morning as I'm not attempting anything when its so dark out as it'll get me! I can't see where it is except in the daytime.

  • mercy.
NoArmaniNoPunani · 27/10/2014 21:29

If it's outside I'd leave it alone

Edenviolet · 27/10/2014 21:31

I don't usually mind dh getting rid of spiders and the way he dealt with the last massive house spider was quite impressive (it was HUGE, he chased it and it was really fast then he just grabbed it and crushed it) but this one, although I'm sure its a nasty one just seemed less threatening as its outside rather than a giant hairy thing running into the dcs room!

Mouthfulofquiz · 27/10/2014 21:34

I'm a bit sentimental about spiders. There is an enormous massive huge house spider in our utility room at the moment, and a fantastic harvestman dangling under the sink. I've read that children's book 'arrrrrrrgggggh spider' and now I think they all want to be my friend!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 27/10/2014 21:38

Mouthful. Me and my nephew read that book (Arrrrggghhh spiders as well.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 27/10/2014 21:38

You could make a Spider Stew for Halloween.

That might be nice.

Mitchy1nge · 27/10/2014 21:41

killing animals for no good reason is wrong

Backinthering · 27/10/2014 21:43

I'm not sentimental about animals. I just think that killing another living being for no reason is wrong.

Mitchy1nge · 27/10/2014 21:44

the most stupid thing about killing spiders is how much we depend on them and always have in order to grow food and not be wiped out by malaria

not that that should make any difference

Mitchy1nge · 27/10/2014 21:46

I'm not sentimental, I like hunting and shooting and so on but I don't understand killing something such a harmless and vulnerable animal

thursday · 27/10/2014 21:46

You don't need to open the window. They find their way in. Kill it with fire.

Tryharder · 28/10/2014 00:39

FGS, leave the poor spider alone. You can't blowtorch it. That's just sadistic.

Can't you scoop it and it's nest up in a box and transfer it to a better place (garden shed etc)

YourMaWithCurseBackOfMyHearse · 28/10/2014 03:44

StayClassy your typo made me chuckle. :o No Percy! Er, I mean mercy! Op kill it. If it didn't want to die it would mind it's own business and set up shop in a nice quiet shed somewhere else.

echt · 28/10/2014 06:12

Leave it alone. It's outside.

For the record, all spiders bite and they're all venomous. It's how they subdue their prey.

Leela5 · 28/10/2014 07:37

Very unlikely it's an actual false widow. Probably a garden spider. Even if it is false widow only one gives nasty bite and they are found in isolated few areas of uk.

Pm me photo and I can tell you which it is.

Please leave it be if you don't know, they keep flies at bay and don't do any harm :(

KnackeredMuchly · 28/10/2014 07:51

Leela, just curious whether this spider was a false widow. It was outside our window but they have surrounded the house a little bit, there are 4 at my son's bedroom window, some at the front door etc.
