to think that something is seriously wrong with the climate?

Visiting DPs in the Midlands - it's nearly November the clocks have gone back, and it's like midsummer. The winter-flowering heathers are flowering, the bumble-bees are bumbling and the butterflies are fluttering by. DF is out mowing the lawn in shorts and t-shirt. DD, with us from university for few days, is flitting about in just a sports bra and calf-length jeans, grumbling because she thought it was going to be cold and that she would need jumpers rather than vest tops, and complaining (tongue in cheek) that if I'd made her wear a vest in winter when she was little she would probably have brought one with her now. DM has deferred the roast lunch that she had planned, and we're having salad instead. Can someone please explain what is going on?

no idea where you are in the Midlands but in this bit it's cloudy, dull, damp and cold

adsy · 27/10/2014 14:30

yes. YABU.
The temperature of the Earth has actually cooled slightly overall in the last 20 years.
There have always been pockets of "Indian Summer" in this country

LurkingHusband · 27/10/2014 14:33

Just a mild autumn ?

It takes centuries - maybe millennia - for the climate to change. It's not like 22,000 years ago we were covered in ice, and 21,999 years ago we woke up to lush meadows.

Meechimoo · 27/10/2014 14:59

over hundreds of years we've had documented periods of extreme mild weather in autumn and winter. Even before industrialization.

BarbarianMum · 27/10/2014 15:03

Yes it's just an Indian summer melting all those ice caps and acidifying the oceans. But of course Hmm

flagnogbagnog · 27/10/2014 15:03

Ooooo I wish I was wherever you are. Here in Wales it's pretty miserable today, and given rain all week Sad

Nomama · 27/10/2014 15:04

It's weather. Climate comes later... much, much later if we are lucky Smile

LadyLuck10 · 27/10/2014 15:10

I'm in central London and today was hot! Actually put a load of washing out this morning and it's dry.

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 27/10/2014 15:13

East Sussex is HOT.

Ive had enough, its still too hot to sleep. And firework night NEEDS to be cold, you are supposed to be able to see your breath and need a wooly hat a gloves while you see the displays.

EatDessertFirst · 27/10/2014 15:17

Its been glorious here today (kent)!

However, my beloved late Grandad always warned me that the longer summer lasted, the worse the winter would be. Swings and roundabouts!

Bowlersarm · 27/10/2014 15:19

Hot here. Getting load of washing dry outside. Tis very satisfying.

NewEraNewMindset · 27/10/2014 15:22

It's beautiful where we are today. Like a spring day. Cold at night though!!

Ditzy71 · 27/10/2014 15:22

Cold, wet and very windy here in North Wales. Fire lit and layers of wool on.

elfycat · 27/10/2014 15:31

Catching up with laundry in Suffolk Grin

This is a GOOD THING as it's taken the insurance company a while to get a new washing machine to me. The launderette was fine for a day trip, and entertained DD2 greatly but I don't want to be always up the high street with my dirty washing.

Especially as I always bump into the same Mum from school (apparently our 5yos are engaged, though DD1 shrugs a bit and seems to be keeping her options open). How am I supposed to go hat shopping with someone who's seen me carting my dirty underwear hidden under a towel obviously up the road in a pushchair?

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 27/10/2014 16:04

I'm getting pissed off with it being bloody mild.

Fuck off mild weather and be chilly but dry at least. I want crisp autumn days and cold nights. I'm sick of sweating my tits off!

wobblyweebles · 27/10/2014 16:26

Well... you are confusing weather and climate. In late October last year we swam in the sea, the year before we had snow. Neither particularly represents what's happening with the climate.
