EBay pram

Aibu? I want a NEW (ie, never been pooped or puked on) twin pram for when our babies arrive. My Dad has very kindly offered to pay for it, and even if he hadn't, we could afford to buy a new one. DH has found a 4year old version of said pram on eBay. It's visibly filthy and the handle is basically a bit of foam held on with gaffer tape. It ends tonight on eBay. aibu to want a pristine pram for our twins? We're not planning on having any more children, and this pram should take them up until they're aged 4, by which point eBay-pram will be 8 years old! thoughts? Be nice please, very emotional today!

I'd want a clean new one too. YANBU. Unless you could find a pristine one on eBay.

No, you're not BU. I refused my inlaws' old pram (first used 8 years ago!) because I wanted a nice clean new one which I'd chosen to fit my needs. As it happens, my dad paid for it, but I know my DP would have been more resistant if we'd been paying, even though we can easily afford a new one ourself!

wheresthelight · 26/10/2014 15:04

yanbu however if you look around you can get some really nice prams on ebay if you look. I got mine that way and it was pristine.

guitarosauras · 26/10/2014 15:04

yanbu.

Congratulations btw

bananaleaf · 26/10/2014 15:06

YANBU. Especially if you can afford it. I got our pram off eBay, but was in very good condition! I use it nearly every day. At least hold out for one that is in better condition. How many weeks are you? What's the urgency to get this one?

skylark2 · 26/10/2014 15:06

If it's money no object, why even look at second hand ones on ebay?

I would have the second hand one, give it a good scrub, retape the handle, and spend / save the difference on something I think matters (newness of pram not even being on my radar for that), and I'd actively enjoy making it nice for my kids, but that's just me. If it matters to you to have a brand new pram, have a brand new pram.

Why on earth would a 4 year old be in a pram? 4 year olds go to school! It's rare for a baby to be in a pram (as opposed to a pushchair) once they can sit up.

(Aside: if it's very cheap and you have plenty of storage space, you could get it for potential spares?)

NinjaPanda34 · 26/10/2014 15:11

Skylark, he's looking cos he's an accountant and doesn't spend money on anything. It's a mountain buggy, so will do them from birth up to whatever age with the different seat options.
Bananaleaf, I'm 24 weeks so just trying to get something bought and organised. They could be here in as little as 10/11 weeks! Eek!

SoonToBeSix · 26/10/2014 15:15

Mountain buggy or not children don't need a pram once they are three unless they have SN or they have to walk for many miles.
Yanbu about the pram , however I would get an excellent condition 2nd hand one personally.?

MrsBloodcurdlingScrEames · 26/10/2014 15:19

She just said 4 as a general age fgs. Missing the point of the thread.

I've had used prams but only great condition ones. Tell him he can buy it but you will just donate it if he does. And stop being a skinflint. He's going to have to get used to paying out with twins!

NormHonal · 26/10/2014 15:20

If it's a Bugaboo, you can buy new handle covers that zip on.

Also, there are places where you can get prams and car seats cleaned up like new. If you are in London, I can point you to one.

But if you can afford new, go for it. I remember how it felt and only new would do for my PFB! (DC2 got second-hand!)

skylark2 · 26/10/2014 15:20

Ah, that makes more sense :) It's still unlikely you'll be pushing them around at 4 (as an example, my kids are almost exactly 3 years apart and I never even considered buying a double pushchair).

Honestly, if something really matters to you, go with it - you're only going to buy your dream pram once. Just remember you're buying baby equipment. It'll all be useless to you in a relatively short space of time. I know many people who spent $$$ on the perfect nursery, the perfect baby car seat, the perfect pram, a massive designer newborn wardrobe...and then they realise it all needs replacing with something suitable for an older child every few weeks (for the clothes) or months/years (for other equipment) and they'd treated it as if it was a one-off purchase.

Nanny0gg · 26/10/2014 15:22

Let him buy it if he insists.

Then take it to the tip and order the one you want.

wickedlazy · 26/10/2014 15:28

Yanbu. If your father has very kindly offered to buy you a new pram, then I would let him. It will probably make him as happy as you. Maybe spin it to dh you don't want to injure your fathers pride/insult him by saying no? And even without this offer it is not unreasonable to want a brand new one, if you can afford it.

Didyouevah · 26/10/2014 15:28

I went through cheap eBay prams/buggies etc with my first 2 dc as they grew and our needs changed. What a mistake.

Pregnant with no3 now and I know exactly which pushchair I'd like. It's very specific, and I'd struggle to settle for anything less. If it was 2nd hand it'd be unlikely to be the right spec, and if it was the right spec it'd be so nearly new I'd hardly save much money on it. (Phil and teds navigator)

I've had some great condition 2nd had pushchairs but also I had a brand new one and sold it 2nd hand. As I kept it in such good condition it sold for quite a bit. So it sort of was a good economy iykwim Confused

MrsMarigold · 26/10/2014 15:29

Ha! I would buy second hand - actually I'm selling one at the moment and it's only two years old and it has been serviced washed and steam cleaned. Don't buy a Bugaboo Donkey they are so heavy, go for the Baby Jogger or Out n About Nipper 360. I think lots of people buy a Bugaboo Donkey realise what a pain it is then go for a Jogger, Mountain Buggy or Nipper. TBH they don't change too much over the years but some are knackered. I have two kids born quite close together rather than twins so mine has probably had less use than one used by twins.

lemonpuffbiscuit · 26/10/2014 15:30

I's let your dad buy you a new pram BUT it is very likely not to be the buggy you use up to 4 years because needs change

lemonpuffbiscuit · 26/10/2014 15:32

however all my friends seem to buy a push chair, then about a year later a light weight mclaren

Didyouevah · 26/10/2014 15:38

Yeah there's 2nd hand - having been cared for, repaired, maintained and cleaned... Then there's the ones that are grotty; been stored in the garage for months and "May need a wipe down". Eugh.

PrimalLass · 26/10/2014 15:39

It's rare for a baby to be in a pram (as opposed to a pushchair) once they can sit up.

I only had one for DD - a Bugaboo (2nd hand actually). 0-3yrs.

JustASimpleSpongeCake · 26/10/2014 15:40

My eBay mountain buggy was a bargain, but ended up being a bit of a waste - the tyres were a mess and needed replacing. Hmm

specialsubject · 26/10/2014 15:41

I know the pushchairs are sold as up to age 4 - but there's no chance a child will fit in it by then, and any able-bodied child won't need it long before that stage.

agree a tatty and dirty one isn't worth buying. But there will be plenty of others around, second-hand but in good nick. Save the planet, recycle!

Chippednailvarnish · 26/10/2014 15:43

I bought a travel system for £800 and sold it 5 years later for £400. I often as think that buying secondhand is a false economy, after all it's not like you get any guarantee with them...

Protego · 26/10/2014 15:49

YANBU! Having said that there are plenty of as new unused prams to be had very cheaply - I got one - so I cannot imagine why anyone would need to buy a dirty damaged one...

Aeroflotgirl · 26/10/2014 15:54

YANBU it sounds awful. If you can afford it but a new one, or pristine one if e bay
