To cook a frozen Lasagne?

Ok folks, need some culinary advice please,
Last week I bought a lovely fresh lasagne and bunged it in the freezer,
Thought I would cook it this morning before I go to work to eat tonight.
I have now seen that it says 'unsuitable for home freezing'
Why does it say this, will we all die?? I've nothing else in for tea tonight, shall I risk it? Confused

I'd eat it, what on earth can freezing possibly do to it that would make it harmful? Confused

SuperFlyHigh · 23/10/2014 10:04

I'd risk it. But then I like living on the edge Grin

SaucyJack · 23/10/2014 10:05

It was probably frozen in the factory and then defrosted to put in the "fresh" fridge.

mausmaus · 23/10/2014 10:06

the sauce might split when freezing/reheating
I would do it anyway

LittleBearPad · 23/10/2014 10:06

It'll be fine. What could have happened to it? I'd freeze one I'd made and had cooked.

LoonvanBoon · 23/10/2014 10:08

I'd eat it too, but can't understand why you'd cook it this morning to eat tonight. Are you going to eat it cold? Or reheat it again? Reheating twice is definitely getting into riskier territory. I think I'd also have defrosted it slowly before reheating - lasagne can take ages to heat through properly, especially if it's in a deepish container.

I would probably eat it, as long as you cook it through thoroughly.

As Saucy says, it was probably frozen already, or depending on where you bought it, the meat part might have been. What was the use by date? If you bought it on it's use by it might be a bit more iffy

digger123 · 23/10/2014 10:12

Whoops - didn't see that you were planning to cook this morning to eat tonight - definite no no to that if you are going to cook and then reheat

Amethyst24 · 23/10/2014 10:16

It's because it has been frozen previously. This means the bacterial load in it will have increased over the 2 periods of defrosting to a level that's potentially unsafe and you shouldn't eat it (although I probably would anyway).

I'm surprised people don't know this, it's pretty basic food hygiene stuff.

Honeezreturn · 23/10/2014 11:02

Oh dear, it's well in date but I was cooking it this morning as I'm not home until 9pm and the plan was for DH and DS to eat it at 5 as they have to go straight out again at 6
They were going to reheat it but it seems I should chuck it and send them to the chippy Hmm

Have a chippy tea treat for DH and DS Op Smile

WitchWay · 23/10/2014 11:11

I'm pretty lax about this sort of thing but think it's probably too many reheatings to be safe.

Honeezreturn · 23/10/2014 11:13

Ok thanks lovely MNetters, chippy it is, lasagne going in bin Sad

Last Christmas it transpired my mum had bought a load of cooked "not for refreezing" prawns in advance from the supermarket, so as to be sure of getting some, & then frozen them to be defrosted on the day. "Oh they'll be alright". We declined them & she was all huffy. Hmm

digger123 · 23/10/2014 11:33

right choice Smile
