to think that MNers abuse acronyms

NotSoSureX · 22/10/2014 22:50

when talking about DP, DC, LO and the nasty FIL. I find even more confusing when they start mixing common (or medical) acronyms with MN ones to speak about TTC with PCOS and looking for CD to DC.

Grrrrr, if you are ACAM (as confused as me), speak now or forever hold your peace. TIA

What's the difference between an acronym and an initialism?

ShadowKat · 22/10/2014 23:27

Moonlight - that's actually easier than some of the acronyms upthread. Once I realized what you were doing! Grin

DF - Dear Friend, Dear Father, Dear Fiance. I used to get very confused thinking incest was quite prevalent and readily accepted on here. Nowadays I just use a little more common sense.

mammmamia · 23/10/2014 07:17

I don't mind the acronyms but some of them are daft. I refuse to type DDad for Dad. What is the point of that? They're supposed to be abbreviations!

hackmum · 23/10/2014 08:08

I like the Mumsnet abbreviations - they make it easier to type and are sometimes amusing (PFB, for example, is an excellent shorthand for a typical kind of parental behaviour).

The one thing that annoys me is when people get the age and number convention mixed up when referring to their children. Instead of writing e.g. DD(7) to refer to their seven year old daughter, they write DD7, which makes it look as if they have seven daughters. I then get distracted from the post because I'm thinking WTF, they have seven DDs?

GilesGirl · 23/10/2014 08:15

How can they be abused? Are they a protected class of words?

ODFOD

Felyne · 23/10/2014 08:16

I think if you're typing on a forum such as this for advice then you really should try to communicate as clearly as you can.

I must admit I give up on a lot of posts where the entire lump of text is one sentence with no punctuation, where BF, DN and DF could mean a few things, what's the point of typing anything if people can't understand you?

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 23/10/2014 08:19

I do love ODFOD.

Also FTFOTFOSM.

So what's 'MNers' doing in your thread title OP? Wink

halfdrunkcoffee · 23/10/2014 13:31

I used to hate the acronyms when I first joined, but I find myself using many of them now, particularly when I'm on my phone.

The "D" seems to have spread to brothers, sisters and parents as well as just husband and children.

I get confused about BF sometimes - boyfriend, breastfeeding or best friend - and GP which can mean either a doctor of grandparents. There is a list but sometimes it would be nice to not have to constantly refer to it!

Espii · 24/10/2014 10:50

half of these aren't even on the list!Hmm

MrsVamoOOOOOOOOOOs · 24/10/2014 10:56

Love the back to front typing. Smile

I got into trouble for handing in work at school writing back to front.

Writing is easier than typing. You just turn the page over. Can't do that with a laptop or phone. Sad

This!! So so this! Some people write huge long posts about, say, their cousin and all the way through refer to this cousin as DCousin. WHY?? Please. Someone tell me why. Or DDaughter instead of DD. It boggles my mind every time I see it and I think they must imagine it to be a condition of posting on MN that everything has a 'D' in front of it!

sashh · 24/10/2014 13:01

No I think they don't understand what an acronym is.

SophiaPetrillo · 24/10/2014 13:02

What does HTH mean? I thought maybe "hand to hold", please elucidate on this one for me.
