To despair at a man who thinks Chanel are prostituting surfing?!?

FB post from a friend's DH. He is a keen surfer and is complaining that the sport is being used to promote Chanel. He is upset because he maintains that surfing is a relatively cheap sport (I have no idea whether it is or not), and it upsets him to see it being used to promote a luxury brand.

It amazes me that this man seemingly has no issue with women being used to sell items, purely on the basis of their looks, with Gisele's arse all over the telly, (especially as he is married with a daughter) but can actually get upset over a sport being used in this way.

AIBU to think that this is so sexist it is almost laughable? I am actually flabbergasted at him.

So people aren't allowed an opinion on anything other than feminism then on Planet MrBumps. Righty ho.

JustNeedAMoan · 21/10/2014 09:39

Feminism is not mutually exclusive to every other issue. It is perfectly acceptable to comment on something without having first disected it for feminist issues Confused

Got to say though - am loving the irony of you bemoaning the use of women's bodies to sell a female product while phwoaring over the blokes in the guineas add Grin

BarbarianMum · 21/10/2014 09:43

Actually ( and not having seen the ad) the use of semi naked models seems more justifiable when selling perfume than almost any other product. And at least she's doing something active rather than lolling, semi clad on some endangered species.

I think I'll save my ire for all the other gratuitous uses of the female form.

mollypup · 21/10/2014 09:44

YABU

Should he just add a disclaimer to eveything he posts now on the off chance there may be sexist/feminist implications? Give over.

cailindana · 21/10/2014 09:45

He sounds like crusty wank sock. People who worry about things going "mainstream" are too stupid to worry about IMO.

Takver · 21/10/2014 09:51

Surely she should be wearing a wetsuit, and probably also boots, gloves and hood, though for a UK advert? >

I suppose that I think that the fact that Chanel are using Gisele's bum to advertise something seems more concerning than the plight of surfing.

The thing is that girls actually do surf in shorty wetsuits that show off your bum, and some (braver souls than I) just get out there in their bikinis, so it's not like they've got her advertising ski gear in her nick-nicks. She is wearing surfing kit and has the good fortune to look smoking hot in it!

Now wishing I'd squeezed into a sexy little wetsuit before baby number 3 was on board and ruined what was left of my figure

Mrbumpsbruises · 21/10/2014 13:01

JustNeed - never said I wasn't a hypocrite Grin. The blokes are lovely. Don't think they should have advertised with them though cos what do. Nice bodies have to do with beer?

And not everything is about feminism in my world, no. But it's the point I was talking about SaucyJack, in this instance.

Have you never seen the ad? It's not really about how the men look that's an added bonus, it's about the horses in the surf, really. I'm only surprised you've not seen it as it's often lauded as one of the best ads ever and it's been repeated a lot.

SaucyJack · 21/10/2014 14:39

"And not everything is about feminism in my world, no. But it's the point I was talking about SaucyJack, in this instance."

So you are allowed to express an opinion on things other than feminism, but your mate's husband isn't. Got it.

If you'd just started a thread about the advert itself, I wouldn't be nitpicking like this by the by. But you didn't. You posted express your disgust that he'd posted an opinion on it that wasn't concerned in any way with #everydaysexism.

Mrbumpsbruises · 21/10/2014 23:38

Sorry for not replying. Packing for holiday.

Not sure I follow your reasoning SaucyJack. I especially don't understand your last sentence. Or the hashtag thingy?

Still, I asked if I was being unreasonable, and the consensus is I am, so I shall take that on board and think about more productive things instead.
