To leave a pot of soup simmering while I do the school run?

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 20/10/2014 14:24

Am I? It takes me 40 minutes to do the school run...it's a very large pot on a very low gas ring.

It's got plenty of liquid in it...no chance of it drying up.

I know "something could happen" meaning I don't get in to turn it off but DH is due home 15 minutes after me anyway.

What could happen? Could a moth alight on the flames and turn into a flaming, mobile fire-starter for instance? There are no curtains or fabric nearby....the difference in the DC if they are fed IMMEDIATELY when they arrive home is astounding.

Nee naw nee naw nee naw.

Don't do it.
The flame may go out and trigger an explosion when you return and turn on the light.

Never leave a gas ring on when you're not there.

whatsonyourplate · 20/10/2014 14:27

I wouldn't. Turn it off but leave a note for DH to turn it back on as soon as he gets in.

Is there room to chuck it in the oven on low gas? That's what I'd do just because the open flame on the gas ring would make me a bit nervy of a mysterious 'something'.

MizLizLemon · 20/10/2014 14:28

Have you got a slow cooker you could put the soup in? I probably wouldn't leave a pot simmering, but will happily leave the slow cooker on all day while I'm out.

(crosspost)

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 20/10/2014 14:29

Oh bums. I've gone out with the gas oven on before...with baking potatoes in there!

Shaska it's a big metal pot....I don't think that would work would it?

Miz come on now..if I had a slow cooker I'd not be asking this would I! Grin

Shaska yes..that pesky "something" Grin

"No DD you can't go to the park alone...something could happen".

"No DH, we'd better not go out without the spare key...something could ocurr."

I asked the very same question a few years back, was told "don't be mad" so i wasn't and stuck it in the oven instead. Seriously, it probably wont boil dry but the gas might blow out or anything really, not worth it and you'll be stressed.

Behoove · 20/10/2014 14:31

What kind of soup did you make?

LizzieMint · 20/10/2014 14:33

I don't ever leave anything on the hob when I'm out. Happily use the oven for the same reason though, my kids are horrible if they are not fed IMMEDIATELY.

AnnoyingOrange · 20/10/2014 14:34

Years ago I accidentally left a pot of chilli on the stove and went to the supermarket

Came back to a horrible smell of burning and the chilli had turned to charcoal in the bottom of the pot

Fortunately, there was no fire

MandarinCheesecake · 20/10/2014 14:34

If your dh is due in 15 after you leave, turn it off and ask him to put it back on when he gets in.

I wouldn't leave the cooker switched on at all tbh (not even the oven).

I am too paranoid after hearing of 2 people I know setting fire to the house this way (both on the school run) Not worth the risk!!

LEMmingaround · 20/10/2014 14:34

Wow - loving the sarcasm in response to helpful replies there OP Hmm

There is a difference between leaving the oven on and leaving the gas hob on, make up your own mind then

Nanny0gg · 20/10/2014 14:35

I can't simmer anything that low anyway.

But if your DH is due in 15 minutes, what's the problem? Turn it off and he turns it back on. It will continue cooking with the residual heat anyway.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 20/10/2014 14:37

Lem what sarcastic response? Confused

lovemyboo · 20/10/2014 14:37

I sometimes chuck a curry together and put on full heat for about ten minutes before turning it off and going out to collect kids or whatever. The heat from the blast seems to often be enough as it's going to keep cooking right? Then turn on as soon as I'm back, few more min and it's done!

You have to really make sure you've turned it off before going out otherwise you shit yourself thinking you've left it on full blast!

BecauseIsaidS0 · 20/10/2014 14:37

I did once, came back home to find the fire brigade outside my building Shock

EssexGurl · 20/10/2014 14:38

I did is - purely by accident - a couple of weeks ago. It was fine. I knew as I was going to school that I had forgotten to do something and couldn't for the life of me remember what. Until we were in the playground after pick up. Cue rush home. All fine and soup lovely. Was leek and potato and I do like a mushy potato!!

Not sure I would do on purpose but OK for me this time.

Nelehwelly · 20/10/2014 14:38

Why did you ask, when you've belittled all of the responses of the people should said you shouldn't do it? Obviously you think it's a reasonable thing to do and opinions to the contrary are silly, so why ask in the first place?

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 20/10/2014 14:38

Mandarin no he's due home 15 mins after I get back from school run.

Behoove it's just a vegetable soup.....nice one though. It;s lovely with cheese on top and some crusty bread.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 20/10/2014 14:39

Welly are you in a bad mood or something? I haven't belittled ANY responses! Weird here today.

OP posts:
ginslinger · 20/10/2014 14:39

I do it all the time

TalkinPeace · 20/10/2014 14:40

love my induction hob : no flames, minimal heat, regularly leave it on when I go out Smile

OP
If your hob is less than 5 years old it probably has the cut-outs that reduce the 'it goes out' risk
not sure how soup would be more at risk of boiling dry just because you are up the road rather than in a different room

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 20/10/2014 14:41

My sister has one of those Peace she loves hers too. Envy

It is less than 5 years old...
