Barbie seems to be faulty

DD was given a Barbie doll for her 4th birthday. She's not wearing very much, just a swimsuit-type thing that's painted on and a little tutu. I've looked online but they all seem to have similarly scanty attire. Does anyone know where I can find some sensible knitted jumpers for her, and perhaps some slacks? Although the box said that this Barbie was a ballerina, DD has established that she actually wants to be an astronomer, and she'll need to keep warm when she's doing astronomical observation.

Even if she decides not to visit the observatory, and do everything by computer, she's not really dressed appropriately for most university physics departments. Has anyone been able to get hold of a Barbie more suited for academic study, or are there any easy DIY modifications I can make to turn Barbie into a slightly more aspirational toy?

Nope - Barbie only has sex-worker style clothes. My mum's friend used to knit Sindy clothes which would've been ok.

Love your DD's attitude though! Thanks

lottie dolls - they are a bit more expensive than barbies, but they have a natural, child shape body and they have great clothes - karate, pirate etc.

It's a bit of fantasy. Barbie isn't meant to represent real life.
My brothers weren't traumatised by the fact that Ken was anatomically missing a part. Hmm
Today's parents overthink things too much

You might find that the swimsuit-type-thing is a leotard!

Can't understand dolls at all these days... it used to be that you only ever had the one doll, and then collected all the outfits etc which were all sold separately.

You didn't have to buy a whole new doll every time just to get another set of clothes.

There are loads of knitting patterns out there for barbie clothes, my mum used to make loads of much more practical clothes for mine when I was little and you can often get free downloadable ones these days.

Peaceloveandbiscuits · 19/10/2014 15:31

My mum made my Barbie an outfit to match what she wore to her job as a secretary. Not terribly aspirational, but damn, impressive in terms of fiddliness! The skirt had pleats and everything!

lizardpops · 19/10/2014 17:57

Barbie now has a labcoat. That'll have to do as an interim measure. At least this way she won't feel so self conscious when she turns up at the lab.
