AIBU to think that Disney films should have more male role models?

My DS is obsessed with Disney style movies. He loves Frozen, Tangled etc
He loves to dress up and play as Anna, Elsa and Rapunzel. I have no problem with this at all and I'm happy for him to wear dresses etc when playing but I think it's a shame that the male characters aren't as prominent for him to identify with. They seem to be either total drips, 'baddies' or just there to carry on the story for the female characters.
You can buy all sorts of 'costumes' for these films for the female characters but I've not seen any for the male characters.
AIBU to think that boys like to dress up and sing too and would be nice for them to have male characters to emulate as well as female?

I think so the only Disney prince/princess movie I can think of with a good boy lead is Aladin no others come to mind.

YonicScrewdriver · 19/10/2014 10:59

Toy Story is made by Pixar, which is owned by Disney.

Despicable Me?
Monsters U?
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs?
Cars (admittedly, dressing up is tougher)?
Madagascar?

All of these have lead males and sidekick males.

Plus the Prince in Tangled is a full character, I would say.

YonicScrewdriver · 19/10/2014 11:01

Ah, sorry, missed that you wanted singing...

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 19/10/2014 11:01

Oh I think Kristoff is a good bloke!

Plus Woody, Buzz, Aladdin, all good.

hollie84 · 19/10/2014 11:01

My 4yo also really likes fairy tale/princess Disney movies but agree that all the "princes" pretty much blend into one! Can't remember any of their names even.

Aladdin is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

makemineabacardi · 19/10/2014 11:04

Don't forget Hercules.

UnMasterChef · 19/10/2014 11:05

YANBU

Hercules and Tarzan are quite good thought, and Jungle Book is always a classic.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 19/10/2014 11:06

The fox and the hound..

SaucyJack · 19/10/2014 11:11

I thought Eugene was a pretty strong character meself.

Disneyeyes · 19/10/2014 11:14

The fact we don't know the Princes name in Tangled says it all really. I've seen it a gazillion times and can't remember his name either!
I agree that Cars etc have male characters but non of the singing Prince/Princess stories (apart from Aladdin do.)
I guess it's all the marketing too 'Frozen' is easily identifiable by the Elsa image but you very rarely see Kristoff as the 'lead' person on the pictures.

don't think i took my sons to see any disney films, studio ghilbi (sp) much more balanced and great stories

Disneyeyes · 19/10/2014 11:17

And I bet I could buy a 'Princess' costume for one of these films in a supermarket but the male version wouldn't be there. Which seems odd to me as some boys like to dress up too.

Sword in the Stone, Jungle Book, Up, Nemo

noblegiraffe · 19/10/2014 11:18

Boys get superheroes, girls get princesses.

Disneyeyes · 19/10/2014 11:19

I'll have a look at them south trouble is the images aren't everywhere you go for those. My DS can spot something 'Frozen' related at a 100 paces. Cakes, stickers, pencils, pants... you name it it's EVERYWHERE!

He does like the Jungle Book, which does have singing and male characters, although I've never seen him try to emulate a bear or a half naked boy as yet Wink

There are loads of films for kids dominated by male characters which wouldn't have female characters in the marketing either.

I would rather all films were for all kids and had a mix of male and female characters, singing or no singing! It's not just the names though - Snow White has 7 named males but assume "Sleepy the Dwarf" costumes are thin on the ground...

(FYI, the Tangled prince is Flynn Rider)

EdithWeston · 19/10/2014 11:24

Give it a couple of years, and he'll have superheroes and male protagonists galore, and you'll be bewailing the lack of strong female characters.

Both extremes are wrong.

YonicScrewdriver · 19/10/2014 11:24

It's not just the "lack of known" names, that should say...

SaucyJack · 19/10/2014 11:25

Eugene wasn't a prince anyway. He was a thief who invented his Flynn Ryder persona as escapism from his life as an orphan.

You're obviously not watching it that closely!

Disneyeyes · 19/10/2014 11:26

I am saying that too as I said in my OP I am happy for him to emulate the female characters but would some equal balance to the males in these films too. If nothing else is lazy character and plot development.

I think "prince" was shorthand for "prince-like" character
