The culture, the diversity, the speed, the men. Currently live in perfectly pleasant but dull small town. Aiming for Bristol. Am v daunted as am a single mum. I have to do it though, not least because the influences here when I was growing up held me back a lot.

People with brain cells??? How rude and inaccurate.

Not inaccurate at all.

The word ni**er is used casually in conversation and the occupants of a local care home for adults with SN are referred to by the locals (including the local policeman) as "the cabbages".

Anyone with even half a brain cell got out of here years ago.
It's like the bloody Wicker Man round here.

Had similar in the village we moved to in Devon not so long ago, bodhran.

My dh worked for the local television station where they received more than one piece of correspondence from the locals who were not happy that the new weather reporter was black. Can you actually fucking believe that?? In the 1990s??

ok, you live in a horrible place
are you telling me no racist people live in towns? And there are no stupid people in London?

Greenwayslide · 20/10/2014 09:12

Definitely is, their presence is just diluted amongst the number of people that live in cities.

HumphreyCobbler · 20/10/2014 09:33

I live in the country and I have never ever heard that horrible word used in conversation. It IS inaccurate to state that country people are racist and stupid. Some people are unfortunately racist and stupid no matter where they live.

Anyone with even half a brain cell got out of here years ago is that why you're still there?.....

Oh YANBU at all! Britain is a small country & it's very easy to get a countryside fix when you want it. I personally find the towns and villages my husband's family live in very insular and suffocating. Nice to visit but always glad to get home.

I like that there are a number of universities on our doorstep in this vibrant city so there's plenty of scope for DC to attend them if they want to rather than HAVE to move away and pay rent.

I love the feeling of being able to look up the what's on guide & KNOW there'll be something good on any weekend. I love that when someone I like is touring its pretty definite they'll be coming to my city and I don't have to worry about parking/last train times/logistics. I love eating in the city of a weekend just as the evening is getting started then walking home with my family.

Horses for courses but I suppose but I know where I feel at home - I'd be devastated if I had to leave.

Yanbu, I would hate to live in the countryside, I just don't get it! I love visiting the countryside for walks, views etc but the thought of living there is awful to me. I am within 10 mins walk of a big city which I access several times a week, galleries, shops, theatres, cinemas, restaurants, cafes and general energy and life. I would hate to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere. I am jealous of all of you who live in London, I would love too but finances won't allow for that!
