my son has sensory issues, he doesnt eat sweets, won't even touch them, and dd, well.. dd eats more than i'd like at halloween. DS wants to get involved, but he won't even hold the bowl out if there's sweets in it!

i was considering, this year, offering up something different, sticker sheets, or halloween themed crayons...etc, just some little odds and ends from the pocket money bit of the toy shop, the crap you get in birthday party good bags basically.

good idea or not? would you, as a parent, complain if a house you went TorTing at offered non-sweets to your child to pick from instead of the usual chocolate and lolly pops?

That sounds great in my opinion Smile

ThePinkOcelot · 17/10/2014 21:28

No, I wouldn't complain. I think It's a nice idea. Go for it.

ShelaghTurner · 17/10/2014 21:29

My dd would go mad for stickers especially. Sounds like a great idea.

AuntieStella · 17/10/2014 21:30

I think it would be extremely welcome!

Notmadeofrib · 17/10/2014 21:30

Why not, I think kids just like swag.

ilovesooty · 17/10/2014 21:31

Gifts should be chosen by the giver. I don't see that the parents of the potential recipients have any right to complain.

AlpacaPicnic · 17/10/2014 21:33

I would say that anyone who complains about a free treat, doesn't get one! We always give packets of Monster Munch... It seems appropriate, is nice and cheap, I happily eat any leftovers. It also looks impressive, makes a nice change from sweet stuffs and I buy multipacks and give the 'flaming hot' packs to the teenagers that come by in one mask between three of them...

WoodliceCollection · 17/10/2014 21:35

I think that's a great idea. There is lots of haloween tat about at the moment, get a bag of plastic spiders or those rubber monster things you put on fingers and things like that and it's like a lucky dip for them.

southeastastra · 17/10/2014 21:37

sounds great, offer lots of pens or rubbers they're also useful!

Pico2 · 17/10/2014 21:39

That sounds great. For a moment I thought you'd want to do what my DM used to do and give out apples. I always worried that we'd get 'tricked' as a result.

OddFodd · 17/10/2014 21:39

sounds great!

jellyboatsandpirates · 17/10/2014 22:02

I wouldn't complain. I think that's a great idea. Then again, I'm of the opinion that any kid going around begging for free stuff at stranger's doors should be grateful for what they're getting. Stickers and crayons? Nice in my opinion.
They don't have to get anything!

LadyLuck10 · 17/10/2014 22:09

It's a great idea. Kids will get plenty of sweets from other homes, so yours will be so much more exciting. Go for it.

JADS · 17/10/2014 22:10

I think it's a great idea. Ds is only 4 but doesn't like sweets (chocolate is different). He would be delighted with stickers though. The monster munch is a great idea too.

ZuluBob · 17/10/2014 22:12

Ohh,I thought you were going to beofferingcarrot sticks or something. Grin

I think stickers, crayons or rubbers would be a great alternative.

chocomochi · 17/10/2014 22:12

I think it's a brilliant idea. Makes a change, so that it feels "special". And if be happy my DCs weren't loaded up with sweets!

PeppermintPasty · 17/10/2014 22:13

As a parent, I would LOVE it, it's a great idea. Yy to kids loving swag, any swag!

Dragonfly71 · 17/10/2014 22:13

Good idea! Saves parents resorting to the switch witch.

Annunziata · 17/10/2014 22:14

I thought you were handing out carrots too Grin This sounds lovely.

My kids would have loved it, especially stickers (they're a bit older now). We used to do Halloween paper shapes in little parcels, as I have a die cutter.

There's a Chinese lady in our village who always gives out lovely and non sweet Chinese snacks - the kids were very disappointed the year she was away!

LaurieFairyCake · 17/10/2014 22:18

I'm making toffee apples for a change this year

CustardOmlet · 17/10/2014 22:20

I make lychee eye balls, healthy and amazing, went down well the last two hallowe'ens!

BadLad · 17/10/2014 23:26

Ohh,I thought you were going to beofferingcarrot sticks

Me too. Reminded me of the thread where a mother insisted that her toddler didn't like any sweets, cake or biscuits and that his favourite food was cucumber sticks in hummus.

Great idea, OP. Anyone with the neck to complain can consider it a lesson in bloody well being grateful for what they're given.

SoonToBeSix · 17/10/2014 23:28

Great idea my dc love stickers etc
