Baby fever

Posting for traffic - apologies.

DD 7 months has been running a fever on and off for 48hrs. Today it was 102.2. Before bed at she had Calpol (6pm) and Nurofen (7pm). Still feels hot, temp is 100.3. She's in a long sleeved vest and a 2.5tog.

Should I be worried her temp is still this high? And should I strip her down? Don't want to make her cold. Thanks.

She's been off food today but taking lots of breastmilk and producing wet nappies.

Strip her down and keep an eye on it. If it continues ring out of hours.

Best to call 111, and get advice particularly if the medicine isn't working..... In the meantime I would take the growbag off until her temp drops.

Hope she improves soon.

I'd swap the 2.5 tog for a very thin sheet/blanket.

FloraPost · 17/10/2014 21:42

She's better off too cold than too hot so maybe lose the bag. Is she listless or unusually tired? Any rash? If not, and she's still taking milk, I wouldn't worry. Could she be teething?

noblegiraffe · 17/10/2014 21:43

Definitely don't put her in a sleeping bag. 2.5 tog is like a heavy duvet for an adult.

Phone 111 if you're worried, that's a long time with a fever. However, stripping her down will probably help.

immortalwife · 17/10/2014 21:46

Agree that's a long time to be running a fever. Strip her down and ask a doctor for advice

Showy · 17/10/2014 21:48

I've had to convert to degrees c. Her fever is 37.9 which is a v mild fever. Actually 38 and above is only technically considered a fever. So it's gone down from 39 to 37.9 which is a drop from a fever to borderline/v mild fever.

How is she? You say she's otherwise breastfeeding okay and hydrated? No signs of pain or discomfort? No other signs of illness?

It's best to look at the child and not the thermometer if you can. If it weren't for the number on the thermometer, would you be worried?

I'd keep her in loose cotton clothing, maybe a light sheet. Not a sleeping bag.

I wouldn't be worried with such a mild temperature in an otherwise feeding/sleeping/settled/rousable/hydrated baby and would be happy to wait until tomorrow but YOU are her mother and if you are worried then you must seek advice from somebody qualified.

Showy · 17/10/2014 21:49

And you don't want to make her too cold either as shivering will raise her temperature. She needs to be comfortable.

ItWasMyOwnSilence · 17/10/2014 21:55

Thank you Thanks

I have undone the sleeping bag and she's laying next to me in bed (she was getting too hot and restless when I was holding her to feed and would not settle in cot).

I though it may be teeth as she's that sort of age, but been told by a doctor teething should not cause a fever (which is contrary to past experience with DD1).

She has not been overly unwell today, a little out of sorts and clingy. I don't think she is in pain.

Update if anyone wants to know...

Took DD to OOO doc's today and she's been diagnosed with Scarlet Fever Sad

Antibiotics and painkillers will hopefully mean she'll be fine in a couple of days.

Thanks again for advise last night.

Im sorry she's not well but glad you know what it is now and it's easy treated

DoughnutSelfie · 18/10/2014 16:50

Awww poor thing

I hope she feels better soon. The antibiotics will do the trick. Chocolate cake for you.
