to not want dh to travel due to ebola worries

Dh is due to travel next month from Heathrow airport for work (not to Africa but don't want to say where for outing reasons)
he will swap over flights on the way abd I'm worried about the possible risk of someone travelling indirectly from Africa on his flight.
AIBU to want to put us all in a bubble?

The way I understand it is by the time someone is able to pass it to someone else, they'd be way too ill to be getting a flight? Not sure if I'm right though.

I think DH is more likely to get colds, flu (unless immunised) and stomach bugs. I'd tell him to keep any cuts on his hands/fingers covered though if you are really worried. He'll be fine ebola-wise I'm sure.

ChippingInLatteLover · 17/10/2014 14:15

which it is not wrong. It is NO different to discussing things re Middle East, Europe, Asia etc

holdyourown · 17/10/2014 14:17

YABU
you may as well not leave the house if you start thinking like that

holdyourown · 17/10/2014 14:18

Thanks to you though OP, I know how debilitating anxiety can be

Whichusername · 17/10/2014 14:19

Oh, let it go Chipping, will you? I wasn't even responding to your post!

ChippingInLatteLover · 17/10/2014 14:26

which If you don't want to discuss it, stop posting about it. Posting & expecting to have the last word because you say so, is rude.

Whichusername · 17/10/2014 14:32

Ha ha Chipping!

whois · 17/10/2014 14:50

Yet another fantastic example proving the general public are shit at rationally and locally assessing risk.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/10/2014 15:43

I do wonder about this. People die ALL THE TIME from Hepatitis, flu and other diseases and we merrily wander around. Are you worried about flu, OP?

Downamongtherednecks · 17/10/2014 17:14

I caught swine flu in Ouaga in the 2009 pandemic, detected at Paris airport by the fever-scanners (I thought I had malaria). When I got back home, the GP was great and didn't panic anyone. Even the dc's school was calm about it. Everyone was just told what symptoms to watch for, and told where to get Cipro. DH was out of the country working, leaving my lovely 6 year-old DS to nurse me, and take his little sister to school each day. Not everyone panics though I did a bit when the Cipro gave be auditory hallucinations.

hackmum · 17/10/2014 18:10

I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person not panicking about Ebola. The risk seems very small indeed to me.

I suppose this means that fate will decree I'm the first Mumsnetter to die of it. Smile

windchime · 17/10/2014 19:45

Tell him not to lick anyone with bleeding eyes and he will be fine.

^^^ I totally agree with this because I pmsl

MTWTFSS · 17/10/2014 19:54

If you are not a doctor YANBU to be cautious however if you do further research you will discover he will be fine :)

If you are a doctor, change profession!!!

Downamongtherednecks · 17/10/2014 19:56

I was getting vaccinations for an aid work trip to West Africa. I declined a couple of jabs as there was no risk I would be exchanging body fluids with anyone. Doctor said "Are you sure? I know what aid workers are like!"..

Stratter5 · 17/10/2014 19:58

No, I'm not panicking. I have HA and I cope by gathering as much information as possible, and learning about my worry. The better informed I am, the better I can assess it rationally, and my conclusion is Ebola is Nothing to Worry About.

buffythemuffinslayer · 17/10/2014 19:58

YABU - he's not going to an area affected by ebola, it would be freakishly unlucky to catch it. Bear in mind the only my victims who have caught ebola and haven't been in infected areas, have been carers for those who have ebola.

I flew to Cannes last week for a global event (work) - came back with a nasty cold, but nothing else. In contact with tons of people. Oddly, nobody mentioned ebola. Nothing stops commerce, eh.

TheDogsMissingBollock · 17/10/2014 20:02

Africa= v large continent! Dh statidtically so much more likely to injure self on way to airport than catch Ebola in these circs.

Aridane · 17/10/2014 21:12

YABU

lomega · 17/10/2014 21:16

Normally I would say you were being a bit too over-protective, because I'm one of those people that goes by the motto 'live for today, no point worrying about X because you might get hit by a bus tomorrow'.

BUT. Even though your DH is unlikely to contract Ebola (it's not airbourne - only spread by bodily fluids methinks so contact with another victim), I am the first to admit I'm really scared of it :/ It's a really nasty virus. I don't think catching ANY disease is nice, but Ebola is probably one of the more horrible ones (in my mind). I feel really sorry for the sufferers.

middlings · 18/10/2014 18:48

thefairycaravan sounds like we're thinking the same then - I knew about but I guess only as I have a colleague from Guinea and she's worried and has been for months.

Glad you're feeling less anxious OP

Hakluyt · 18/10/2014 19:01

Re. the Africa thing. I presume that if there was an outbreak of, say, cholera, in Athens, people would be just fine with Americans panicking about travelling to London? After all, it's Europe..............
