To really dislike the Lego Friends figures?

DD has just written her Christmas list, and has put "Lego Frainds" on it.

I will probably buy some for her, I don't want to be one of those mums who is all principled about toys, and make my child miss out amongst her peers, and in general I really like Lego and think it's a great toy.

But AIBU to absolutely hate the little figures?

I don't really mind the fact that it's marketed at girls.

I don't really mind the fact that it has lots of pink and purple bricks - it's nice to have some different colours in the collection, after all.

I don't mind the subject matter of the sets - shops, cafes, schools, jungle adventure, holidays, professions (albeit slightly stereotypical female professions). I would have liked that as a child playing with Lego, I think.

But the figures, WHY? Why are they taller and thinner than the normal, iconic lego figures, and why have they got natural coloured skin - they should be YELLOW! And why are most of them wearing mini skirts? It just makes it more separate from all the other Lego sets you can get, and makes me not want to buy it.

I mean, FFS, the little yellow lego person is absolutely iconic. Why did they need to design a new one???

People who moan about this sort of thing are the type who like their boys to wear tutus and pink feathers but their girl? oh no, she can't, she needs a stick and a light sabre. weird Confused

Funny last time I looked my DD has a fairy wand but no light sabre, a sparkly, swishy princess dress, but no stick. Okay so she does have a sword, but her brother never wore a tutu.

I still don't want my preschooler to have weak wristed twigs as her only option in dolls.

Actually those of us with teen girls did moan that all Lego was aimed at boys, rather than the unisex stuff of our childhood.

However, pink and purple bricks, schools, houses, etc that appeal to girls, could have been added to standard Lego. There was no need for a totally separate, slightly different scale range.

Also the name "Friends" makes my blood boil. Not all little girls are lucky enough to have a group of friends, DS1 certainly didn't.

it's not as good as Fabuland Grin

The adverts for Lego Friends drive me insane aswell with the stupid high-pitched voices and constant bloody hugging. Gives me the rage!

What about a small lego friends set or one which doesn't come with many human figures, but mainly animal ones, and then some normal lego as well?

LegoAcquaintance · 18/10/2014 21:01

BertieBotts yes, that's a good idea, I think that's what I might do. The ice cream van from the Lego Movie range looks fun, and has 2 normal, yellow chunky female figures, so maybe I'll get that and some of the Friends animal sets.

DaddyPig I have no problem with tutu wearing, and my daughter wouldn't want a light sabre (or know what it was) and that's fine too.

I think if Lego are going to develop a brand new figure, they should be superior to the originals, and these aren't superior, they're just barbified and have less functionality. They look like Barbie or Polly pocket dolls, it's just lazy, unoriginal. Lego could at least have designed something completely new, but no, they had to copy all the existing examples of shockingly ridiculous body shapes.

Im not sure Lego would give a flying brick tbh. Given the price and popularity of the brand, it's clearly worked
