I had someone tell me today that their child was 24 months.

So 2 then yeah? Hmm

Aibu? Grin

No you are definitely not BU!

I bloody hate it, I heard someone the other day refer to their 38 month old! WTF? Your kid is 3, just say they're 3!

Grrrr.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/10/2014 22:30

Why is an 18 month old not 1 and a half? Huh? Huh?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/10/2014 22:31

After 1 it seems unnecessary to me, but clothes seem to be sized in months up to 18-24 so perhaps that's why people persist for a little longer.

PrettyPictures92 · 16/10/2014 22:31

After 11 months I started referring in years, I can't count the amount of months and translate them into years after that Grin

hollie84 · 16/10/2014 22:32

Up til 2 I would use months. After 2 not sure I remember the months!

I have a 50 month old.

woundbobbin · 16/10/2014 22:32

I totally agree - although must admit to saying the dd is 23 mths when paying to get into somewhere which doubles the price once they reach 2!

iwishiwasacat · 16/10/2014 22:33

I think using months is OK up until 2 years. I usually just say one, one and a half etc. but sometimes it's good to be a bit more specific.

ShadowStar · 16/10/2014 22:33

I reckon it's fine up to 24 months.

TheRealMaryMillington · 16/10/2014 22:33

Ah, its just what people do with their pfbs, leave them alone

Also, there is a big difference between 26 months and 34 months, but they are both 2, aren't they? Lots of HCPs and Health info is done in months too, up to age 3.

Funkytown · 16/10/2014 22:33

you are being unreasonable i have a 72 month old Wink

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2014 22:34

Next week is my son's birthday.

He'll be 252 months.

Sorry Grin

YANBU, OP.

Artandco · 16/10/2014 22:34

I can see when it makes sense tbh. A child who can't talk still at 2 years people might query as no idea whether just 2 or almost 3.

It's like saying ' baby is only 1 so still needs spoon feeding. Fair enough if 13 months, tad lazy if 23 months

mrsHawk1ns · 16/10/2014 22:38

YANBU though sometimes saying "he's 18, 19, 20 months" etc rolls off the tongue slightly better than "he's one and a half, he's one and three quarters" I think I will stop after 20 months & just start saying "nearly 2".

ZuluBob · 16/10/2014 22:40

Eek, I'm 606 months old.

CheeseAndBeans · 16/10/2014 22:41

Can see why people do, for the same reason artandco said. A child that has just turned 1 is going to be at a totally different place developmental wise than a child that is almost 2.
It's the weeks thing that gets me. I asked someone how old their DS was the other day, reply was 47 weeks... I stopped counting weeks months ago, DD is 10 months and was made to feel rather stupid when I didn't know her age in weeks! :-/

cate16 · 16/10/2014 22:42

Maybe it's something to do with the EYFS ? Children are assessed in months until after 5th birthday.

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2014 22:43

ZuluBob we're practically the same age - I'm 605 months old Shock

CrashDiveOnMingoCity · 16/10/2014 22:44

I think it's acceptable up to the age of 2 and just plain weird afterwards.

WitchWay · 16/10/2014 22:47

Agree it's a bit daft.

I used months up to 18/12 then it was more One and a Half, Nearly Two, Two & a Bit etc.

bigbluestars · 16/10/2014 22:51

I can't see it matters

DoJo · 16/10/2014 22:52

I thought there was a rule of twos:
You count in days until they are two weeks old, weeks until they are two months old, months until they are two years old and after that you just shrug and say 'Huh? Oh, I dunno - some?'.

Purplepoodle · 16/10/2014 22:53

I use months until they are two as the milestones vary so much until they get to 2.

waithorse · 16/10/2014 23:07

I've just worked out my youngest is 59 months. Sad

HarlowEver · 16/10/2014 23:10

Lots of HCPs and Health info is done in months too, up to age 3.

I'm referring to random people that are asking your childs out of interest or being polite.

I'm not talking about health care.

Up to 2 I use months, after that years.
