AIBU to feel sick with some of the kids costumes for Halloween?

Whatever is happening with this celebration? It seems like every year the costumes are getting nastier and nastier and they don't seem appropriate for kids IMO
Most of the proposed "themed" foods are just gross so to say.
And the decorations - holly hell!
AIBU or is the whole thing moving too fast for me from year to year?

What costumes in particular don't you like?
Can't say I've noticed anything offensive..

poolomoomon · 16/10/2014 19:16

Yeah, costumes used to be really nice back in the day Hmm. Get a grip, it's a celebration of the DEAD for heavens sake. It is supposed to be gory, spooky and fun.

Also kids costumes I've seen are really not scary in the lightest so not sure where you've been looking...

I get fed up of people saying it's an American event as well. It originated with the Romans and Druids. Trick or treating and jack o lanterns originated in Ireland!

I cannot find a pumpkin suit in this town for my 4 year old, this annoys me,

Turnip lanterns and guising up here in Scotland when I was wee.
Home made costumes and papier-mâché masks from the newsagent. I can remember my sister going guising as a vampire in the 60s

MrsDermotOLeary · 16/10/2014 19:21

Are you in the UK Fixer? Tesco have pumpkin suits for toddlers, may go up to 4 years.

Fixerupperz · 16/10/2014 19:25

Ive got a tesco

Fixerupperz · 16/10/2014 19:27

jeez sorry, 10mo grabbing my phone mid post Grin

I have a tesco but i cant find it here, il have to go online i suppose, i did see a very pretty costume that is a swan? like a black sparkly dress and an eye mask. Never seen a swan like that in my life but its very pretty Grin

DizzyKipper · 16/10/2014 19:28

I need examples of what you consider nasty, can't say I've seen anything that seems particularly bad. My main gripe is how most of the girls costumes involve tutus.

PiperIsOrange · 16/10/2014 19:29

In a shop window in my town it quite scary.

It has a bride and groom with a tiny white coffin. It gives me the creeps.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 16/10/2014 19:30

Agree with you OP.

Tinkerball · 16/10/2014 19:33

I love Halloween, my house would freak you out OP! Well and the garden to because I do that up like a graveyard!

IcingandSlicing · 16/10/2014 19:35

Well, I guess the gory part is not my cup of tea maybe...
Pumpkins, witches, fairies, skeletons are ok. But some of the others including face masks, "blood"-stained costumes, guess the more monster likes ones look pretty horrendous imo

Fixerupperz · 16/10/2014 19:36

Sounds amazing tinkerball!

AnyoneForTARDIS · 16/10/2014 19:38

Think its all these horror film masks like elm street and Halloween and whatever else horror stuff. on the shelves for kids to have.

If the films aren't supposed to be watched by kids then why sell the masks from them?

That's what you mean too, no, OP?

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/10/2014 19:39

The blood stained outfits for children were about when I was a small child in the early 90's. Hardly new.

CarryOnDancing · 16/10/2014 19:40

I hate Halloween with a passion. I just don't get it. Even a standard witch costume is inappropriate for children to me so whatever costumes you've seen, count me as disliking them too!

IcingandSlicing · 16/10/2014 19:40

Fixerupperz I know the swan costume you are talking about - I thought it looks great! You may find it online I guess.

OP posts:
IcingandSlicing · 16/10/2014 19:41

AnyoneForTARDIS yup, my thoughts exactly! Just too scary for adults then why seen as appropriate for kids? I don't get it.

I saw that swan costume too, I was really hoping DD would pick it. She picked out a black kitty costume instead, darnit.

DiaDuit · 16/10/2014 19:42

How could any of us know whether its moving too fast for you 'from year to year'? (whatever that means)

AnyoneForTARDIS · 16/10/2014 19:44

My DC has autism and anything like this freaks her out big time, cant take her to shops where they sell these things as shell scream the place down (but shops want profit so wont do anything about it!)

Only toy shop that doesn't do Halloween is The Entertainer.

DizzyKipper · 16/10/2014 19:45

Thinking about it I've only really looked at the younger kids costumes as mine are 2 and 3 weeks, so it's possible I've just not seen any gory ones. Shall have to keep a look out next time I'm there.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 16/10/2014 19:48

DiaDuit bit snippy there.

Op agree with you the year is going too bloody fast for me too.

DizzyKipper · 16/10/2014 19:49

Ah yes, the years always go too fast. The days however...
