Shop window

My 10 yr old has just told me he's accidentally broken the local shop window!
He dropped/threw his scooter down, didn't realise the distance and the handle bar has cracked the window!
The shop owner knocked on here he said (I didn't hear her) and now he's come clean.
What on earth do I say? How much are replacement shop windows?
Surely if it's an accident she won't expect me to pay for a new one? Hmm

Has she asked you to pay?

londonrach · 15/10/2014 19:36

Afraid you need to pay

CunfuddledAlways · 15/10/2014 19:37

Surely the shops insurance would cover this??

SweetPea3 · 15/10/2014 19:38

Insurance claim?

Caboodle · 15/10/2014 19:39

Go and say sorry on behalf of DC (and get DC to say sorry to). You may have to pay but they may have sufficient insurance, and it was an accident. IMO this is the only thing you can do in the circs, and it sets the right example to DC.

LadyLuck10 · 15/10/2014 19:41

I would go with a huge apology to her and dearly hoping you don't have to pay, rather with an attitude of 'it was an accident so surely I don't have to pay'. See the difference.

astewart · 15/10/2014 19:41

She hasn't asked me to yet, I'm going to take him down to apologise and he can offer to do jobs as an apology.
I absolutely cannot afford to replace a shop window an in all fairness it was an accident, I thought about insurance but then would her premiums go up?

yabu. Your kid broke a window....who else would pay for it only you?

queenofthepirates · 15/10/2014 19:50

Accidents still need paying for and I can't see why the shopkeeper should pay. I think you need to work out a payment plan, painful as it may be for you then ensure your son repays you through jobs round the house for you (not the shopkeeper, that would be a massive pain for them as they will have to firstly manage him, very probably apply for a work permit to make it legal and thirdly, what can a 10yo do adeptly that will repay the cost of the window?). Harsh lesson but it's only fair.

Stampysladygarden · 15/10/2014 19:56

I think you should offer to pay something. Shop windows are bloody expensive depending on how big it is. My main one is about £800. Insurance doesn't cover everything, insurance is bloody expensive and I actually cry every time my window is smashed.

Add to this that a potential day's business could be lost while it is being refit.

Nomama · 15/10/2014 19:58

Oh stop it!

It was an accident so shop keeper's insurance will cover it. However, show willing and neighbourliness by taking him round to apologise.

Stampysladygarden · 15/10/2014 20:01

Balls that the shop keepers insurance will always cover it. And what about the days takings lost during refit. And of course premiums go up. I've dealt with three 'accidental' broken windows this year. Fucks me off.

Andrewofgg · 15/10/2014 20:03

She might ask you to pay the excess, but you don't have to.

As for premiums going up, no, that's her problem. And if she has no insurance against the loss of business that's her problem too.

pennefab · 15/10/2014 20:03

I'm with the apology absolutely. If the shop owner submits for insurance deductibles may apply and insurance rates may increase. Shop owner still out money due to your child's actions. Good luck. I think you or your child should take responsibility for it.

Stampysladygarden · 15/10/2014 20:05

Bloody lovely attitude.

PiperIsOrange · 15/10/2014 20:08

Offer to pay the insurance excess.

Icelollycraving · 15/10/2014 20:10

Andrew what a delightful attitude.

astewart · 15/10/2014 20:14

Phew!
Window was broke a couple of weeks ago! He apologised immediately and told her it was an accident at the time, I've seen her since then and she said she didn't want to tell me as he was so honest about it at the time!
900 it would have been!!!
I did offer to put towards but she said it was already broken and she couldn't justify takin the money off me.
Turns out she was knocking on to tell me the boys had fallen out!

Bollocks to that too Smile

Businesses should have adequate insurance. But OP should expect to be asked to cover any excess.

And having a window refit doesn't have to mean a day of lost business. A large local shop just had a lorry run into its window. It took a week and we all carried on using the shop!
