Ok, I know I'm not being unreasonable per se...

But has anyone else have any tips to prepare for Urodynamics? I kind of know what it entails but would still appreciate some experiences.

Also have to have a bowel CT scan in the near future (no appointment yet), any wise words on this?

Thanks (I'm so worried I don't even care about being reprimanded about this not really being a bona fide AIBU Smile )

Urodynamics doesn't hurt at ALL. Its just a bit undignified :)

Bowel ct is not bad. I had to drink a solution beforehand- about 1 litre of vaguely aniseedy stuff called gastrografin?- but there are other drinks like barium they might give you.

I was also injected with contrast which was very odd. First it made my mouth taste metallic, then a warm feeling went all over my body and it felt like I wet myself (but I didn't).

The ct itself, you lie there with your legs/abdomen in the machine and your head sticking out. There was a light above my head and when it was lit I had to hold my breath. I could hear the techs over a speaker and I think I had a buzzer or something for if I needed to talk to them.

Hope that helps a bit! Oh, a word of warning, a few hours after the ct I suddenly had explosive diarrhoea, I think it was the drink, so I wouldn't plan much for the rest of the day.

Shakey1500 · 14/10/2014 20:18

Oh thanks for the replies (and reassurances)

Crohnically Thanks, I'll be sure to stay near the lav! I'm a bit confused though (and a bit dim) as for me, the bowel CT scan is to see if anything is going where it shouldn't at the lower/exit end of the bowel. If I drink a liquid will that not just sit in my stomach? Confused How will they see what's happening at the exit end? Will I wait until I have a bowel movement etc?

If you drink a liquid it will go right through eventually

All depends what they are doing the scan for as sometimes you need a laxative to clear everything out and they may put air in (CT pneumocolon) and sometimes it is to look for infection or something tracking where it shouldn't be which maynot need so much prep.

Shakey1500 · 14/10/2014 22:23

Thanks watching It is to see if something's going where it shouldn't and secondly for infection. It's all a bit of a mess really Sad

I've had a urodynamics study. The lady doing it was lovely, very respectful, and it was nowhere near as bad as I feared. I was kept covered up as much as possible. It wasn't painful, more a bit uncomfortable when the probes were inserted. I hope you get some answers.

PiperIsOrange · 14/10/2014 22:36

With a ct scan there is a lot of noise, so they give you headphones to listen to music.

Hope it goes well.

RaspberryRuffle · 14/10/2014 22:44

Good luck tomorrow, Fanjo is right on both counts, different hospitals have slightly different procedures but basically they will watch what happens as your bladder fills (usually filled via a catheter) and as you empty it (you should be behind a screen or curtain and pee into a special toilet).
They will probably ask questions as you go along, tell them when you feel bladder is full etc. The medical staff should put you at ease, if you're a bit shy maybe you could wear a dress rather than trousers, that way you don't feel so 'undressed'. Don't forget to buy some chocolate for afterwards, it's a rule I have for all medical procedures except maybe the dentist.

Thanks again all. I just want it all sorted.

The urogynae wanted to know all about my tear during birth. This gets complicated. I was told it was a 3rd degree tear, and in the consultant's notes, it states a repair to a 3rd degree tear BUT later on in the notes it states 4th degree tear. The repair was/is awful. I have almost no perenium (current consultant said it was "absent" Shock ) and now, 7 years on there's problems. There's a bladder prolapse that needs repair but he wants to see what else is going on as my bowel movements have changed quite dramatically over the last couple of months. Sigh.

I have had urodynamics done, no pain at all and the two staff were really nice and really put me at ease. Was a bit odd sitting on the comode thingy in front of them but all in a days work for them. After they had done their bits on the machine I then did some jumping up and down on some blue paper towel until I leaked a bit of wee ( did not take long for me)

I ended up having a bladder op to put some mesh in to support my bladder - TVT I think. I am very happy to report that I can cough, sneeze and vomit without having a river of pee run down my legs.

Good luck!

mineofuselessinformation · 14/10/2014 22:59

Shakey, get yourself over to the current 'Any old prolapse' thread. There's a wealth of information and support waiting for you.
I was in there for a time, several threads back, when I had multiple prolapses. It was very helpful and supportive.

CrohnicallyPissedOff · 15/10/2014 06:41

Mine was a small bowel CT, I was nil by mouth before hand, then drank the liquid and waited 30 minutes. By that time, because my stomach/small bowel was empty the liquid went into my small bowel.

I think that for large bowel they can give you an enema, you'd probably need to take laxatives beforehand. But I don't have first hand experience with those, sorry.

londonrach · 15/10/2014 07:56

Good luck today op. No advice just wanted to wish you luck x

Shakey1500 · 15/10/2014 19:52

Thank you Thanks

It wasn't as bad as expected. More uncomfortable than painful. She said that the stress incontinence was minimal but, because I'm experiencing a frequent urge that they would probably be doing a biopsy to examine the bladder lining, does that sound right? To be honest, I couldn't take all of it in!

mineofuselessinformation, Yes, I'm on the prolapse thread Smile Replies can be sporadic though which I don't mind at all as hopefully, all that have suffered are enjoying busy lives Grin

As a side note, I gave my birth notes to the nurse and she showed them to the consultant. He agreed that I'd had a 4th degree tear, not a third (as sometimes mentioned in the notes Hmm )

So, I now have to wait for the bowel CT scan to see what that throws up.

I see you have already been but I had them a few months back, It was nothing to worry about, I'm doing my bladder diary then back to see them soon

I had no leaking but dual phasic emptying and pressure issues and could hardly hold anything before I needed to go again, I pee 30-40 times a day, I'm on meds for OAB now
