To expect food to be edible?

Did an order with approved food having stumbled across it mentioned on here.

Spent £40 mainly on packed lunch items for the kids.

On opening most of the items they are completely stale and had to be thrown away.

Now I know they sell put of dates things but surely it should be edible? I have thrown the vast majority of the food away so have not managed to actually save anything.

I have contacted them to complain but they have not even bothered to respond.

So AIBU to expect to be able to actually eat there food?

What sort of food was it? Things like cereal bars I'd imagine would go off, but things like raisins and stuff should be a safe bet? Never used them, but I'd probably go for 'can't really go off' food? :/

Gorja · 14/10/2014 16:14

It included raisin and nut bags which are gone off and taste foul.
Crisps ditto above, tuc biscuits ditto above. Special K paprika things again in the bin as both soft and taste gone off.

Basically the only food that hasn't made it to the bin is the pasta.

I am so disappointed with it after the great reviews on here and am out of pocket.

What is Approved Food? Get on their Facebook and Twitter and shout about it....companies HATE that.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 14/10/2014 16:28

Hang on....just Googled. Their tagline is *Britain's Biggest seller of past and close to best before date food"

They sell stale food. What did you expect!

loudarts · 14/10/2014 16:28

I've just started using them and have found the crisps to be a bit stale but things like raisins have been fine.

OwlCapone · 14/10/2014 16:29

They can't open the packets to check how "crisp" they are, they can only go by the date.

Gorja · 14/10/2014 16:31

Tried Facebook but you cannot write on their wall just send messages which they are ignoring.

I imagine it's a gamble, like getting a loaf of bread half price because it goes out of date that day. Sometimes it will be good and fresh, others it will be too stale to be worth eating.

Have you got an aldi or lid or home bargaims/b&m near you?

I'm. Assuming money is tight but it's a big risk to take when you can't replace what's no good. In mean time can you be referred to a good bank if your struggling?

Not sure you would have a case to complain tbh. It's the chance you take when you buy out of date food.

Food bank

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 14/10/2014 16:41

I have quite a few packets of the tuc biscuits and they are fine.
Complain though. Tweet them

MrsFlintLockwood · 14/10/2014 16:51

I hope I'm not the only one to snigger at 'nut bags' Blush

Anyway I think it's the risk you take TBH, it's why I won't use them.

Caboodle · 14/10/2014 17:25

Just looked at this and you can hover over the item with your mouse and it tells you the use by date...so it's clear which are very out of date and which are not so bad; therefore YANBU.

Sorry to hear you have had such a negative experience. I regularly order from Approved Food and haven't had any problems but I do use my discretion. For example, the Special K Paprika crisps are Best Before: 25 May 2014 so they're nearly 5 months past their best before date and crisps do tend to go soft when they're out of date so I wouldn't have ordered those. I've had good experiences with things like pop, pasta, canned goods and seasonings because they keep longer. You could complain but I think they have covered themselves by being upfront that the food is past it's best before date.
