Hello/Hullo/Hallo

It's hello with an E.

Hullo and hallo annoy me. Is it just me or does it give other people the rage. MIL send emails with hullo and it irritates me.

Hallo is surely an expression of surprise - "hallo, what's that doing there?". I use it in that sense.

I also say "hullo" but wouldn't write it... It looks strange.

DishwasherDogs · 14/10/2014 11:24

I'm sure AA Milne used Hallo in the 1920s.
Perhaps there was an acceptable deviation.

I've also read hullo (and autocorrect doesn't correct it), so perhaps all versions are ok to use?

Boltsum · 14/10/2014 11:25

It does look strange written doesn't it.

She uses it in ordinary emails, it's just the way she writes it.

Hullo is a very Julian from the Famous Five thing to say.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 14/10/2014 11:27

Hi!

Didn't Enid Blyton used to write "Hullo" in her books?
I say Hello - perhaps it's a colloquial/age-related variation

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 14/10/2014 11:29

(x-post with Digruntled - great minds Grin )

LiverpoolLou · 14/10/2014 11:29

According to the OED all three are correct.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 14/10/2014 11:30

Hullo and hallo are definitely both acceptable variations, I just personally wouldn't use them in that context. Unless I wanted to impersonate Julian that is Wink

DisgruntledAardvark · 14/10/2014 11:32
Grin Or possibly Milly Molly Mandy. A mark of a wholesome children's book character!
PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 14/10/2014 11:33

Hullo sounds like a sullen version of hello to me. Anyone saying hullo in a book is clearly having a miserable time in my opinion.

Hallo is very jolly and surprised I agree with pp.

Boltsum · 14/10/2014 11:48

Ha MIL does like think of herself as upper middle class jolly hockey sticks (she's not at all) maybe that's what it is.

The U or A just look so wrong.

Hullo is also Jill's-Gymkhana-speak. Also wholesome.

I write "hello".
