to have walked out?

First day at new job, cold calling people. I couldn't hack it, there was no training just an induction (man talking at us for half an hour about how it was up to us how much we earned) and then being bunged on a phone for 5 hours. I had a panic attack and walked out. People shooting at me down the phone with no training wasn't worth minimum wage.

It sounds shit and I don't blame you for walking out.
What are your options now?

Quitelikely · 13/10/2014 17:31

I think yabu. You could have at least explained why you were leaving etc.

However nobody can make you do anything you don't want to do but I just think it would have been common curtesy to say, thank you, goodbye!

ithoughtofitfirst · 13/10/2014 17:32

If it helps i had a job i hated and stuck it for about 3 months. I used to have panic attacks, i woukd cry in the toilet and once actually had to pull over in my car and vomit at the roadside on my way to work because i was dreading it so much.

I wish i'd walked out on my first day. Good for you.

LadyLuck10 · 13/10/2014 17:33

Why did you apply for cold calling though? I think it's a bad reflection on you to just have walked out. You should have spoken to a manager, asking for more training.

HeySoulSister · 13/10/2014 17:33

Why did you take it? Were you on JSA?

WooWooOwl · 13/10/2014 17:33

Whether YABU or not depends on whether or not you need the money, and whether you have any other job prospects.

StarSwirl92 · 13/10/2014 17:34

ordinarily I would have but I just went into fight or flight. And I flew.

YANBU. It doesn't even sound like a real job, no training and "it's up to you how much you earn" is code for being reliant on commission and pressured to hit targets because the basic wage is shit. I've worked in telesales before and it's high pressure and not for everyone even when you are working for a professional company with proper training, which wasn't the case here. You knew from the first day it wasn't for you, it wouldn't have got any better, why waste your time? See this as a learning experience, it gives you a clearer idea of the kind of jobs you want to look for (and the ones you want to avoid) in future.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 13/10/2014 17:43

Yanbu

magpiegin · 13/10/2014 17:44

Guess it depends whether you need the job? If you were on jsa you should stick it out while applying for other jobs as it's easier to get a job when in a job. If you don't immediately need the work then I don't blame you!

StarSwirl92 · 13/10/2014 17:49

Tbh, I do need the money. But I've been panic attack free for 3 years and today I had one of my worst ones. I know I should have stuck it out and I accept leaving was rude and probably damaging. But I just couldn't. I shut down, walked a mile in the wrong direction before calming down enough to call a taxi home. I guess I came here for some perspective on how irrational I was being.

Star don't go for jobs like that. They're shit on a stick. I've done them and couldn't stand it. Anyone prone to panic attacks should be in a calm environment.

Sparklypants · 13/10/2014 17:52

I did that job for about 6 months (before DS) nothing in this universe would make do it again! It is truly soul destroying.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 13/10/2014 17:52

Is it going to affect your benefits now Star? Go and see the doctor tomorrow about your panic attacks.x

StarSwirl92 · 13/10/2014 17:55

Yes I think it will affect my benefits. I'm booked in to see a doctor ASAP. Thanks for the responses.

You know you were being irrational but it's done now. It will obviously affect your benefits (I'm not being mean, I know that's how it works) so be prepared for that and for what you will say about it to them and have a plan in place for either preventing it happening again and/or assessing jobs before you start them.
