To ask what the hell is happening to me?

I woke up last night to the sensation of feeling like I was being tipped upside down and span round. I was absolutely terrified, screamed out for DP and got suddenly extremely hot and sweaty and couldn't breathe. It went on for about a minute. It then stopped for a few minutes leaving me feeling just dizzy. It then happened twice again over the next 5 minutes and then I was very violently sick over the side of the bed.

I've woke up this morning and I feel dreadful and still extremely dizzy.

What is happening to me? Am I ill?

Oh awful! My mum had something similar and it was diagnosed as vertigo, but there are lots of conditions and illnesses where the fluid in your ear becomes unbalanced. It could be an ear infection or something which needs management, I think you'd be right to ring out of hours now and get some advice. I hope you feel better soon.

Excitedforxmas · 12/10/2014 08:09

Sounds like an ear infection

GilesGirl · 12/10/2014 08:11

Go to A&E.

DragonMamma · 12/10/2014 08:11

Sounds like something to do with your inner ear. I've had labyrinthitis before and I felt like the ground was moving constantly.

Inner ear infection? I'd ring nhs direct or go to out of hours doc today. Sounds awful.

CareBearWithFangs · 12/10/2014 08:15

I've had vertigo before and this is worse! I think I'll ring out of hours or 111?

I'm also 13 weeks pregnant, does that make a difference? It doesn't feel like normal pregnancy dizziness to me. I feel like I may have had some sort of mild panic attack afterwards as it absolutely terrified me during the night.

Sounds like labyrinthitis...but if you're pregnant I'd ring OOH and get checked out.

moxon · 12/10/2014 08:20

Ears are weird things. Rather more delicate that we give them credit for. Sounds like yours are rebelling and you might need antibiotics? Sounds a rubbish experience though!

mummaduke · 12/10/2014 08:30

I had this, or something v similar, at about 12 weeks pregnant.

It was midday, the ground started spinning, things went weird colours, I just got so hot and dizzy and felt like I was about to faint. Awful.

I wasn't sick, and it only happened the one time. GP put it down to low blood pressure so make sure they check that out too.

fiorentina · 12/10/2014 08:33

I had something similar when pregnant as well, again put down to low blood pressure. I was at a work event and had to go and lay on the floor in the toilets until I felt ok. I didn't have any further problems though but best to get checked out. Hope you feel better.

BettyNettle · 12/10/2014 09:12

Sorry this is happening to you.

Do NOT go into A&E it might be a viral infection. Call 111 now.

Wishing you good luck.

FoxgloveFairy · 12/10/2014 09:19

Awful! As a nurse, let me say that this could be a number of things- front runner, some kind of middle ear issue, as mentioned. Visit to the GP in order, and probable antibiotics. You may need them for a while as ear infections are stubborn.I really hope you feel better soon. Flowers

CareBearWithFangs · 12/10/2014 11:09

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I've called 111 and have an appointment with out of hours doctor at 1. So glad I don't have to go to a & e.

Still throwing up every time in move my head. Really feeling sorry for myself Sad

How are you now?

aurorasky · 14/10/2014 14:13

I started a thread on General Health about Labyrinthitis. Sounds very like what you are going through. You have my sympathy! I feel much better now but did need medication. Best wishesX

whois · 14/10/2014 14:26

I had something similar happen once. Started off feeling a bit drunk and over the next 5 mins progressed to lying on the floor feeling like I was being pinned there by the whole world spinning. Very sick with it. Got into bed once the sickness passed and it calmed down to feeling mildly dizzy after a few hours. I wasn't ill or anything tho, just had an inner ear disturbance the GP thought. Hope yours is short lived!

hanflan · 14/10/2014 14:36

Oh yes I've had this, came on very suddenly at work and was very frightening and upsetting! It was labyrithitis (sp?) and went within a couple of days thank goodness! So sorry it's happening to you, it's rotten!

Wowthishurtsalot · 14/10/2014 14:37

Vertigo caused by an ear infection or migraine

Drs for you

Titsalinabumsquash · 14/10/2014 14:43

When I had labryinthitus I was like you describe in your OP, I fell down the stairs trying to get up the next morning, DP took the day off work because I couldn't walk without falling over or throwing up.

I hope you're feeling better now. BrewThanks

handcream · 14/10/2014 15:07

I have had it twice, its truly horrible. I found the best thing was to find a comfortable position in bed and just not moved your head. The anti sickness pills helped somewhat, however you literally have to wait for it to go. I was going to have to have the head movement carried out in the GP's surgery but they could only give me a date for the following week and by then it had gone!

ithoughtofitfirst · 14/10/2014 15:14

Bloody hell OP! Have you been to drs yet?

CareBearWithFangs · 14/10/2014 16:11

I'm still really ill. Got some meds from doctor on Sunday to take by putting them under my tongue.

On Sunday didn't keep any fluids down. On Monday some fluids and today I've actually kept some toast down hooray! Gradually feeling better but I'm so dizzy I'm sick when I move pretty much.

My absolute sympathy to anyone whose ever had this, it's bloody awful!

The weird thing was when it woke me up on Saturday night I was spinning so much I thought I was being dragged out of bed and then had a panic attack I think.

You have my complete sympathies. I get bouts of vertigo regularly and its horrendously debilitating

Wishing you a speedy recovery

ithoughtofitfirst · 14/10/2014 17:52

My mum had it once and was in hospital with it.

It's no joke. Plus the added panic attack must have been awful. Bless you Sad
