Having a discussion with DH who is properly appalled that I fell about laughing when he suggested that Top Gun was a "brilliant" film. He has now banned me from discussing it with DS in case I "spoil" it for him.

Is it me??

I loved it. DH (ex Navy) loves it. Told him the stuff above, and he said, "can't people just enjoy for what it is?" I agree.

Top Gun started my love of fast jets and men in flying suits but I haven't watched it in ages. The soundtrack still earns it's place in the car though. I remember being horribly embarrassed by the love scene when I was about 10!
I'm sure I read recently that Top Gun 2 is being written?

Dirty Dancing is shit as well, but it's a particular kind of shit that can be enjoyable even though it is shit, if you are in the right mood.

Actually I have a theory that Dirty Dancing is only really good if you were aged 14 or younger when you first saw it. And it's rated 15...

I remember going to see it about 3 times at the cinema when it first came out. We were about 13 and MADLY in love with Tom Cruise.

It's utter bollocks but as someone said, it's a totally iconic film that defined an era. Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, Ghost.....

A pedant writes .........The aircraft were supposed to be Mig (Mikoyan Gurevitch) 28's . This aircraft did not exist in Soviet Inventory. The aircraft shown were actually Northrop F5E Tiger 2's which the USAF was using for aggressor simulation at the time.Had they really come across Libyan aircraft, they most likely would have been Sukhoi SU17 (Nato Designated) Fitter C.

The Grumman F14 Tomcat was superior to the Soviet Aircraft in so far as it carried the AN/AWG 9 radar coupled with AIM 54 Phoenix Missile system which was capable of tracking 18 targets at once and launching 6 AIM54's at individual targets simultaneously. There would have been no "Dog-fighting " The Phoenix has a range of over 120 miles the first the Libyans would have known about it is when their aircraft exploded. So the conclusion is Topgun is a load of old Bollox .......... Oh and we have much better stuff now .
