to wonder who on earth buys olives with the stones in and why?

I was pondering this in the supermarket earlier today.

I know black olives aren't everyone's cup of tea, fair enough but for those of you who do enjoy them as I do I can't understand the point of selling them with the stones intact when you can buy them pitted already for no difference in price.

So what do people do with the stones? Why do people buy them whole like that? I've had both types and can't taste any difference either.

My life is not complete unless I know the answer to this aibu.

I do, when I can find them, they taste entirely different from pitted olives. They hold the oil in better for a start.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 10/10/2014 20:09

I think they taste nicer too grockle...

Trills · 10/10/2014 20:10

So I can use my dish

vanillavelvet · 10/10/2014 20:10

I also prefer the taste.

moxon · 10/10/2014 20:10

Tastes a lit better as whole fruit pit and all. And much more fun!

Benzalkonium · 10/10/2014 20:11

Definitely taste better. Pitted ones tend to be milder tasting.

Try some nice kalamata olives!

moxon · 10/10/2014 20:11

*lot. A lot. Autocorrect.

WitchWay · 10/10/2014 20:11

DH & I went to a very drunken pre-Christmas drinks & nibbles party some years ago at a neighbour's house.

The host was fairly pissed & was handing round a bowl of spat-out pre-chewed olive stones Shock

Some people were taking them & eating them Shock

His wife was furious & really embarrassed Grin

We didn't eat any - not pissed enough to be completely oblivious! Grin

vanillavelvet · 10/10/2014 20:11

They're more fleshy, or something.

HappyAgainOneDay · 10/10/2014 20:12

Don't you eat cherries? They come with stones in them ......

vanillavelvet · 10/10/2014 20:12

Ha. WitchWay, that is pretty grim!

sonjadog · 10/10/2014 20:12

Much more fun? How much fun can an olive be?

Annunziata · 10/10/2014 20:13

I do, the flavour is better if they aren't stoned.

moxon · 10/10/2014 20:15

I swallow my cherry stones, but not my olive stones. Haven't really thought about why before? Possibly the shape...? (I generally swallow all pips and pits of cherry/watermelon size and smaller anyway).

Fairylea · 10/10/2014 20:16

Grin @ how much fun can an olive be.... and the dinner party!! Shock

Hmm maybe my taste buds have much to be desired then. I might have to try them again... just seems a lot of hassle. I want to pop them in my mouth and chew, not faff about.

I will get some tomorrow and do another taste test!

I buy stoned for cooking but whole for eating (unless they're stuffed with something interesting)

I like black for cooking but green for eating!

moxon · 10/10/2014 20:17

Sonja - you should always play with your food before you swallow. Your teeth and tongue deserve it. Grin

Annunziata · 10/10/2014 20:18

My mum says the stones are good for your bowels, but she is obsessed with people's bowels and is probably just making that up!

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 10/10/2014 20:20

Trills that dish is fab

MaidOfStars · 10/10/2014 20:21

Olives with stones in taste better. The only acceptable alternative to the stone is a piece of garlic stuffed in. Pimento olives, fuck off.

WitchWay · 10/10/2014 20:22

I like pimento olives but agree garlic ones are superior Smile

coffeeinbed · 10/10/2014 20:23

I do.
It's easier to keep count just how many I've had.

Bambambini · 10/10/2014 20:27

Usually buy stoned over pitted. They do taste different plus I always imagined pitted would be more expensive or more processed in some way.

paintedfences · 10/10/2014 20:28

Also, they're fun to eat.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/10/2014 20:28

They are nice and you can such on the stone for hoursGrin
