Worthing

Hello, thinking of relocating to Worthing from East London after 20+ years as a single mum with 3 young boys. I've been told it's an up and coming area (i.e. has a bit of a buzz about it?) with some good schools and wanted to know what people feel that live there? I'm ready for a change but obviously want to make the right one.(I have friends in Brighton/Hove but I don't feel this would be the right choice for the boys plus expensive). Planning to visit a few times in next few months so any advice/places to check out would be much appreciated x

It depends on your cash. Ferring, steyning is lovely but expensive. Center worthing is a bit grim but pockets of niceness. I think Shoreham has more to offer. Sea and downs, close to Brighton and not as expensive.

I think it a bit of a hole, sorry. High street quite chavy in my opinion, not a pleasant place. What about Lewes? Loads of charming pubs etc an v close to Brighton which has good food and drink on offer.

SaucyJack · 20/10/2014 23:25

Shoreham has far less to offer than Worthing. It's definitely gone upmarket over the years, and has quite a trendy feel due to the Brighton overspill, but the town "centre" itself is tiny. Just a few cafés, charity shops and Boots.

loumaria · 21/10/2014 22:03

Shoreham does indeed seem 'full' and prices have increased dramatically in the last 6 months while I've been looking. Will be down to spend some time in Worthing soon so will let you all know how i get on. Feel very positive though and am fine with a bit of grottiness - I've lived in East London for the 20 odd years! Thanks for all the great posts.

ps - Broadwater has been mentioned to me a lot so is probably top of my list in terms of areas and schools.

Is nobody going to mention Littlehampton? There always seems to be plenty to do with children on the seafront there. (MIL lives nearby so we've been there at all times of year).

Just wondered if anyone had anything to add to this and what you decided to loumarie? We're considering Worthing at the moment so this was very interesting to read.

Rikke1977 · 14/02/2016 14:04

Loumaria - did you move?

whatodowhattodo · 13/09/2020 22:45

Not sure on the etiquette around this but can I ask @loumaria if you made the move and how it went?

takethegirloutofwales · 13/09/2020 23:10

Don’t do it. I’ve been visiting my in-laws there since the late 90s. It’s dull, full of NIMBYs and retirement complexes. My husband who’s born and bred there says he wouldn’t go back in a million years. To me, it’s somewhere you go to die...not me- i want to pop my clogs somewhere a bit more interesting.

I can comment well having lived all over London and Brighton too. Can confirm Worthing is a great place if you want:
-A lovely quiet beach
-Beautiful countryside and walking nearby
-Friendly safe community, quite diverse and queer friendly
-Very good cafes restaurants pubs and bars (both traditional and also natural wines bars and small plates etc, craft breweries for a bit of pizazz)
-Good schools
-Leafy parks
-Decent town centre with walkable shops
-Three train stations(!) and an easy enough commute straight to Victoria/East Croydon/Clapham, and Brighton of course
-Decent parking (especially compared to Brighton)
-And affordable homes! I bought my three bedroom house in a good area for only 30k more than my one bedroom flat in Brighton-For us it's been a no brainer and we love it, we're in our 30s and lots of our friends are following suit.
-Best areas: Check it out in person. Personally we're near the station on a leafy nice street, Tarring (West) is also desirable. But the best way to ascertain is to go and walk around.

Just asking - which part of Goring by Sea is better - above or below the railway line ?

BrianPantry · 15/08/2025 17:34

Is Worthing Brexitty?
