to wish that there were more old fashioned cinemas around.

They all seem to be disappearing and being replaced by large omniplexes, usually located in big soulless shopping centres beside motorways, with vast car parks that don't even feel that safe late at night.

AIBU to secretly long for the nice old fashioned cinemas located on the street, with one or two screens, and people queueing outside to get in and old plush seats and nice middle aged women with torches showing you to your seat and selling a few sweets and small tubs of ice cream at a little counter beside the ticket office.

Now it's all escalators and long corridors and massive buckets of popcorn and super large cokes and it's just not-the-same. Sad

2 in Cumbria ( that I know of) with intermission and cheaper than the other places.

poppysqueak · 10/10/2014 16:45

I can recommend both the Curzon Cinema in Ripon and the Station Cinema in Richmond, North Yorkshire.
Both very nice small cinemas (do RSC and National Theatre screenings too).

Although I believe there is a good chance of running into The DM's Liz Jones at the Station Cinema!

Gatekeeper · 10/10/2014 16:50

Dome cinema in Worthing is another goodie

Hoppinggreen · 10/10/2014 17:38

There is one near us - it smells funny!!

Charitybag · 10/10/2014 18:34

Ah, SoonToBeSix I'm near the Woolton too and I love it! The double seats at the back, the ice-cream during the interval! I remember going years ago when the seats on one side of the cinema were the smoking side!

When we go there I always buy my sweets and drinks from them as I know they have struggled to stay open over the years but if we go to a chain cinema I pay a little visit to Poundland before hand for the goodies!

BadRoly · 10/10/2014 18:39

We have one in our town! It has 4 screens so is almost a multiplex though (even though screen 4 is much like watching a big telly at home)!

Ours has sofas in at least 2 of the screens as well as them bringing drinks/food to your seat Grin from their own pretty good 'restaurant'.

KatherinaMinola · 10/10/2014 18:46

Ah yes, Charitybag. I remember the Penultimate Picture Palace in Oxford. Plush velvet, a tray for your alcoholic drink, and you used to be able to smoke there too. Twas lovely Smile

scurryfunge · 10/10/2014 18:57

The Rio in Burnham on Crouch is a gem.

amyhamster · 10/10/2014 19:03

Zefferellis?
Rightnext to a gorgeous vegetarian restaurant

FryOneFatManic · 10/10/2014 19:48

The Regal cinema in Melton Mowbray has some luxury seats at the back, about 4-5 two seater sofas, remaining seats comfortable. You can even get wine in ice buckets, and other drinks as well as sweet, popcorn, soft drinks etc.

Really nice.

Wetoopere · 10/10/2014 19:55

Zefferellis/fellinis is lovely

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 10/10/2014 20:00

We have one in our town, lovely lady who asks if we enjoyed the film, and also serves the tea and coffee.

Best of all £2:50 a seat! :)

EATmum · 10/10/2014 20:05

Aimless I agree- we love the Everyman in Walton-on-Thames. Sofas not seats, good coffee or wine, nice snacks, yummy ice cream: it's a proper evening out.

ConcreteElephant · 10/10/2014 20:08

FelixFelix I went to Uni in Leeds and used to love Hyde Park Cinema and the Cottage Road Cinema. Did you go to those?

Hyde Park Cinema was wonderful, I could look out of my bedroom window to see when folk had started queuing and we'd mosey on down the road!

They used to do special nights, such as showing the Three Colours Trilogy in one night, or a Withnail anniversary special. Such a great way to spend an evening.

I was in Halls near Cottage Road so that was convenient too. So wonderful to have a cinema, usually showing the 'smaller' films, or older classics, in a residential area, you don't have to drive to a massive, soulless multiplex. I loved the seats in the Leeds ones, big and plush.

ConcreteElephant · 10/10/2014 20:10

Has anyone been to The Roxy, near London Bridge station? That's great, you all sit at tables and have your food while watching the film. I saw In Bruges there years ago, would love to go again.

Haven't been to the flicks for ages, not since the DC were born.

Guiltypleasures001 · 10/10/2014 20:36

In the next town to us we have The Luxe cinema in Wisbech, it's very plush with large leather seats or two seater settees.
It has a coffee and wine bar, with free parking and one large screen. I think it seats a maximum of 100 at a time you can see all the big films, and hire it out for special screenings.

We love it and like to support the local shops and theatres when we can.

FelixFelix · 10/10/2014 20:40

Elephant yes! Were you in Lupton or James Baillie? I used to live close to Hyde Park Picture House too. Even the building from the outside is just lovely. They do a baby friendly viewing each week and I'm desperate to go but dd wouldn't sit still for that long Sad There's now an Everyman cinema in town which is ace too.

AlleyCat11 · 10/10/2014 20:46

I hate the cineplex. And shopping centres! Luckily I live in Dublin city centre. I like the Savoy & the Screen (IMC). Not as much choice as bigger cinemas, but if you're not looking for a Tom Cruise blockbuster then they're perfect. The IFI for arty films.
I always bring my own food. You can't beat Manhattan popcorn & a bag of Percy Pigs! I've even been known to stash a Magnum ice cream in my bag...

ellenjames · 10/10/2014 20:50

You need woodhall spa!! It's the last kinema with an organ player and it's ace!!!Grin

micah · 10/10/2014 21:02

Anyone remember cine city in withington? Loved that place!

ConcreteElephant · 10/10/2014 21:02

Felix, I was in Tetley Hall for my final year (showing my age now, I think it was sold to developers quite some time ago!) so that was a short stroll from Cottage Road...

In my third year I lived on Chestnut Ave., perfect for the Hyde Park, which is, as you say, a gorgeous bit of architecture. They've come a long way if they do baby-friendly showings now. That's brilliant. It's great that both cinemas are thriving.

The town I live in now is about to get a redeveloped old style cinema so I'm looking forward to trying that one out. I'm looking forward to the DC being old enough to sit through a film in a cinema rather than a DVD!

Clawdy · 10/10/2014 22:38

micah I remember Cine City when it was The Scala in the late sixties! I loved it too.
