To wonder why The Guardian seems to be totally in love with Russell Brand?

It appears he's got the front page of the mag this Saturday, so doubtless we'll be hearing more tedious pseudo-radical posturing which has been trotted out umpteen times before, but is somehow deemed more palatable when it pours from the lovely lips of our Russell.

They seem to give him endless opportunities to peddle his self-aggrandising nonsense.

OP posts:

I can't stand the man either and find it deeply insulting that he is given a platform to spout his ill-informed ideas. He sounds like a cocky a-level sociology student discussing what needs to happen with the world. It's not just the phone incident but also the sexual harassment of other staff around him like a junior wardrobe assistant that he allegedly told to take her top off. He hasn't apologised for such behaviour and I don't think should be given space to discuss inequality when he is perfectly happy to oppress women.

Redhead11 · 10/10/2014 08:40

i read an article about him a couple of years ago that absolutely made my skin crawl! He is completely misogynistic and everything he does is to make sure that he is noticed. He is incredibly untalented, hence the dirty, unwashed appearance and the ghastly hair; it gets him noticed. Once he is noticed, he opens his mouth and reveals how thick he is. A complete creep.

carlajean · 10/10/2014 08:54

I find him an annoying self-publicist, and not intelligent at all. As the OP said, the mysterious thing is why The Guardian loves him so much.

CocktailQueen · 10/10/2014 08:58

YANBu - he's a complete twat. Really annoys me. Just can't see what everyone sees in him. emperor's new clothes? And he's a bully. Just yuck.

scatteroflight · 10/10/2014 08:59

I loved this article about RB....

www.spectator.co.uk/columnists/rod-liddle/9309752/russell-brand-is-duller-than-even-the-grimmest-political-interview/

"That’s why I enjoy my mornings in bed with Russell. It’s like a condensed version of a particularly bad edition of the Guardian, filtered through the veins of an imbecile. Russell told the world not so long ago that there was no point in voting because it changes nuffink, innit. The sort of thing you hear not from the pub bore, but from the bedraggled halfwit in the corner with his half pint of Guinness, who even the pub bore finds insuperably tedious. Incoherent faux-left conspiracy theories that would have made even the late Tony Benn blush with embarrassment. Owen Jones when he was still mithering around, falling over and having tantrums, in kindergarten."

Delphiniumsblue · 10/10/2014 09:00

He makes my skin crawl too and I agree with every word Katie and Jazz and carlajean have said. I wouldn't buy a second hand car from him - that says it all! I definitely wouldn't want even 5 minutes in his company and wish he would sink into obscurity.

Delphiniumsblue · 10/10/2014 09:01

And I won't buy the Guardian on that day.

carlajean · 10/10/2014 09:08

Me neither

hackmum · 10/10/2014 09:31

He makes my skin crawl too. I agree that that phone call to Andrew Sachs was malicious, and not just unpleasant for Sachs but for his grand-daughter who could reasonably have wanted to keep her private life private.

I don't find him at all funny either. Annoyingly, I've read a couple of pieces by him in the Guardian that I thought (to my surprise) were quite well-written, and I don't know what to make of that.

As to why the Guardian is so in love with him - best guess is that they think it will help draw in a younger readership. Perhaps it's the same as their love affair with Apple, which is also excessive.

Nancy66 · 10/10/2014 10:03

He's awful.

It's sixth form common room politics. Just ranting nonsense spouted by a bloke who doesn't think anyone should bother voting

Perihelion · 10/10/2014 10:17

But changed his mind about voting when talking about the scottish referendum....and so misogynistic.

Viviennemary · 10/10/2014 10:23

Presumably Guardian type people are interested in reading his opinions and all about him. Can't think of any other reason he is always featured.

Mrsjayy · 10/10/2014 10:27

Hes a maverick isnt he a bit rude a bit naughty flounces about spouting big words like a flouncy thing but he actually says eff all of importance. I can't stand him he looks filthy in actually not washed filthy he is all hype and ego. And probably thinks he is a reincarnation of Lord Byron meh

duhgldiuhfdsli · 10/10/2014 10:28

"I think he is principled and fair"

Brand sued the Sunday Times over an accusation that he had been unfaithful to Jemima Khan (it appears that he can hand it out, but he can't take it).

He didn't sue over this story:

www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/4469260/Russell-Brand-refuses-to-film-What-About-Dick-until-wardrobe-girl-flashed-boobs-at-him.html

So we can presume that it's true, as he has the means and motivation to sue. Do you think that's the act of a fair and principled man?

Nancy66 · 10/10/2014 10:29

constantly banging on about the evil Murdoch - but allowing his books to be serialised for big bucks in Murdoch press.

RonaldMcDonald · 10/10/2014 10:37

Dear God, do you think that anyone in the public eye has time to sue over every fake story written about them?
Even if they do, it takes them some time and is often settled ooc

It is not hypocritical to sue over a lie that can affect your relationship

effinandjeffin · 10/10/2014 11:42

I imagine Russell Brand morphing into a type of Peter Stringfellow figure in ten years, complete with leopard print thong and a girlfriend who is a third of his age.

The man is a total misogynist and is starting to take himself too seriously. I loved him when he started out, but I'm rapidly going off him.

effinandjeffin · 10/10/2014 11:45

That Spectator article is very funny btw and just about sums up how I feel about RB

Spindarella · 10/10/2014 13:11

I don't agree with everything he says, but he is articulate and passionate which I like.

ConferencePear · 10/10/2014 13:32

I agree that he's
" he is articulate and passionate which I like."

The thing is I've taught a lot of 15 year olds who are like that, but it doesn't mean that I ant them to run the world.
I find his arrogance breathtaking.

Comito · 10/10/2014 13:36

I'm another one in the 'can't stand' camp. Why the Guardian (and the New Statesman for that matter) persist in treating him like some latter day wunderkind is a mystery to me.

When he came out with all that 'don't vote' nonsense before the last lot of elections it made me want to bang my head on the desk in despair. People should be more engaged with politics, not less, you thundering bellend.

SpringHeeledJack · 10/10/2014 13:48

I like him

I like that he still gives a shit, even though he REALLY doesn't need to

duhgldiuhfdsli · 10/10/2014 13:51

When he came out with all that 'don't vote' nonsense before the last lot of elections it made me want to bang my head on the desk in despair.

"I wouldn't imagine the Scottish government, independent or in conjunction with Westminster, are really going to represent you people because, as you know, that's not how politics work...Don't get excited about but yeah, have independence if you want, but actually the true independence we need is independence from governments not independence from imaginary nations."

You want to be Nigel Molesworth, handing out cutting bon mots about Albert Camus and Colin Wilson.

You'd settle for being Adrian Mole, filled with anger about Margaret Thatcher.

You are Russell Brand.

Hakluyt · 10/10/2014 13:53

I've got a very passionate articulate 13 year old who can talk the hind leg off a donkey and is very keen on social justice. I wonder if the Guardian would give him a job?

Amazing how often "a breath of fresh air" is synonymous with "ill informed bollocks"

trixymalixy · 10/10/2014 14:07

Can't stand the man. His big words don't fool me.
