To think supermarkets should have a bit on their online shopping that lets you donate to food banks?

I only really shop online so I can't do the instore donation that they sometimes have.

It'd be great if supermarkets let you buy something and just click a "donate item to foodbank" box to tick. It would work so well when things were on offer too and make it so much easier.

Then they could take a bulk delivery every week or so to local foodbanks.

I like the idea of donating through online shopping and would happily donate extra for a food bank with my shopping.

I would prefer to donate cash as I hate having to choose food for donation (currently having this problem for DD's school harvest festival) - I don't know what on earth to buy.

KenAdams · 07/10/2014 19:51

I think it's usually a £40 minimum spend, bar Asda who is £25 DoJo and I don't know anyone who donates that amount regularly to a foodbank.

Yes, monetary donations would work too.

Great idea. Will report post for some head office support. Maybe they can speak to Jane over at Radio4 she must know people too.

ColdCottage · 07/10/2014 19:59

It could be supermarket vouchers which the food banks could then use to buy what they need.

I would or or under up my bill to donate to a food bank. I do it quite a bit when online shopping, I always donate when ordering a dominoes pizza.

They could have 3 charities at one time, you could click on a donate to charity and add it to your shopping bag, like any other product. If you buy baby stuff you can bung a 50 p donation to a children's hospice. 50p to Guide dogs when buying pet food. Food bank with groceries.

It'd be easy to change charities every few months.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/10/2014 20:17

I'd love to do this. I'd happily do the few quid in my shopping rather than donate food itself so that the local food bank could choose the food it needs.

Many thanks for reporting this. Genius idea imho.
We'll have a chat in the morning when the 9 to 5ers get back in.

It's a good idea, probably work better with just cash like you can do on paypal for charities and then the supermarket can send the food.

CallMeExhausted · 07/10/2014 20:23

Years ago, I found myself in need of the services of a food bank.

Now that I can, at least once a month I check with our local food bank and spend a set amount of my budget on the things they say they need most. I do my shop online and then assemble my food bank purchases and drop them off when I have a few minutes.

Not the most convenient, but I still recall so clearly how I was helped when I needed it most - I am happy to do it now.

Admin posted on my thread - nearly shit myself wondering what I'd done wrong Grin

I think I'll write to the supermarkets that offer online shopping and see what their response is.

I think it would make the pickers jobs more difficult.

WooWooOwl · 07/10/2014 21:10

They could donate to food banks, or they could allow you to donate to any charity with cash. I'd be happy to add a pound onto my online shops, if it's a charity I support. Doesn't Tesco already support a charity every year? I thought I'd seen them supporting diabetes UK.

Joshuajosephspork · 07/10/2014 21:18

Why oh why are you not all up in arms about the need for food banks? Sorry, I think it is dreadful that they exist in this country in this day and age. We shouldn't be saying what a good idea this is we should be getting fucking angry - and store that operate zero hours contracts and pay breadline wages are part of the reason.

Yes, I do donate to food banks but I am furious every time.

Behoove · 07/10/2014 21:19

Great idea!

FloatIsRechargedNow · 07/10/2014 21:24

Great idea - how many of us are going 'of course! of course! - so simple yet probably pretty easy to implement overall, so OP:

standing ovation.....APPLAUSE.....APPLAUSE!!

JamaicanMeCrazy · 07/10/2014 21:36

You know if you go online and search for your nearest foodbank you can often donate money online? Also you can sign up to Give As You Live m.giveasyoulive.com and donate via them, Trussell Trust is one of the charities they deal with Smile

JamaicanMeCrazy · 07/10/2014 21:43

By the way there are loads of websites you can use through Give As You Live including things like if you were getting sky or upgrading your sky and it will tell you how much the company donates too. It doesn't cost you any more, but a percentage of your shopping total is donated.

ProudAS · 07/10/2014 22:46

Great idea must remember to put the tea and coffee I forgot I'd bought for the food bank in the collection box next time I'm at Tesco

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 08/10/2014 17:43

What a genius idea.

Let's put it to the supermarkets and see who wants the fab publicity most!
