How do car insurance companies work out how much people pay?

Confused DH's car insurance is £1332 per year, we pay it monthly. He's been driving for 8 years, 3 points on his licence for speeding which he got 4 years ago. No claims, although haven't carried any no claims bonuses over as we usually change every year and go with the cheapest quote. Car is 12 years old, no one else on his insurance.

DSD just got car insurance after getting it free for the first year with her new car. She's 22, car is 1 year old, she has no points, but does have a claim as someone shunted into the back of her pushing her into the back of someone else's car earlier this year. Her car insurance is £1350. Confused She's been driving for 3 years, and has DH as a named driver on her insurance.

The only difference could be our postcodes I suppose, we live in an awful area with a high crime rate and she lives in a decent area with not as much crime. We both have drives.

I don't get it. I thought that ours would be much cheaper as DH is older, been driving longer and the car is older. I'm glad that she's managed to get cheap (well sort of) car insurance, but it makes me think DH's should be much cheaper?

Dh and I insurance is £800 for the year.

I don't have my own NCB as I have always been additional driver, as I have never had my own car. Dh has 5 years that is protected. No points and finally no accidence is the last 5 years.

For me and DP its £600 a year. I drive a 14 reg 1l car and have only been driving for a year (I am 26 though) and DP has an 07 reg 1.4l and 7 years no claims. Mine has business insurance as well as personal. We live in a nice area with low crime.

Not sure who mentioned business insurance but we found it a nightmare. 2 years ago when DP left a job with a company car (5 years no claims) we could only get a handful of insurers to accept it.

Forgot to add - no points from either of us.

Definitely sort out the NCB thing. You are throwing money away.

I have an SUV and dh a small high performance (although old) runaround.
Just been quoted around £160 per year each, with £100 voluntary excess, courtesy car for any damage/theft/loss and legal cover. Both used to get to work and kept on drive overnight, not in garage.

SHOP AROUND!!!

No no no minty. Once they go, they ALWAYS go a second time! I got less than 1000 miles before mine went again. Sell now while it still has some value in it! I had to sell mine for 800 and that was a fight!

This happened to my friend who lived in an arguably nicer area. She had a car more expensive by 3-4k, but we had an Our Fault accident and 3 points - her record was clean. Her insurance was about 300-400 more than ours!

We switched every year for the cheapest. She had stayed with the sane insurer saying she checked every now and then but the difference was too small to bother...

Loyalty is no longer rewarded.

8 years NCB should equal a large discount. I have a 3 year old land rover discovery and pay just over £280. DW has a 1 year old range rover evoque and pays about £350.
If you're aged over 25 then you shouldn't be paying north of £600 unless you've got a shed loads of points / claims!

nope, think OP is too busy banging head against wall in horror...
