To think it's rude not say hello

squiggler · 07/10/2014 08:05

There's a mum at DCs nursery (my DC plays with her DC all the time) who completely blanks me in the mornings. She knows who we are as dcs point out and say that's squiggler's/other dc's mum. Fully understand that most parents are busy hurrying off to work in the morning. This morning dc and I were walking up to nursery and walked past her (empty street, only us around) so I looked at her and said hi and she totally ignored us. Wouldn't mind so much except for the fact that our DCs play together at nursery.
AIBU to think it's rude?

It's rude if you were looking right at her when you said hello and she literally just blanked you and walked on.

It's not rude if she has a hearing issue or she's just a dolly daydreamer like I am, like my best friend is too and genuinely don't see or hear people sometimes. I've done it before, DH will say "that was so and so, they were waving and said hello!" I honestly had no idea and obviously seemed rude. There's been a few times when my mum will say someone saw me and said hello the other day and I just blanked them, I really had no idea. My best friend does it a lot, it appears as if he's doing it purposely but he isn't. Just in our own worlds .

But if you're certain she heard and just blanked you then yeah, she's unnecessarily rude.

If this is the worst thing going on in your life, you are fortunate.
On the scale of 1 to 10 in importance it ranks a -20.
But you dwelled on how offended you are, posted about it, and still thinking about it.

YABU

MyMelody · 07/10/2014 12:25

She may have a lot on her mind, I wouldn't worry about it. Try chatting to her at the nursery one day if you want to be friends.

Topaz25 · 07/10/2014 12:29

tiredoldmum

That's true of most things on AIBU though, most posts are about social misunderstandings not life and death issues!

yellowdinosauragain · 07/10/2014 12:36

Tiredoldmum are you usually so rude? Do you pride yourself on being so condescending? If you think the thread is so pointless just don't bother to post and move on Hmm

RachelWatts · 07/10/2014 12:43

As other people have said, she could be daydreaming, or planning tonight's dinner, or any number of things.

What's rude is the man who lives near me who, on one occasion I dared to acknowledge his existence, followed me down the road shouting about how he didn't know me, who was I, I should just fuck off and leave him alone. All because I nodded politely and said hello...

bouncinbean · 07/10/2014 12:44

In answer to the original post then I would assume rude until I find anything out that negates that.
With respect to face blindness what does that mean? You don't recognise people straightaway? But surely people say hi back to anyone - you don't need to 'know them' surely to respond to a hello. (but maybe I am thinking about this as a northerner not a southerner Wink)

TheNewStatesman · 07/10/2014 12:57

I remember assuming the old guy who lived next to me was a big old racist because he blanked me a couple of times.

Then later I discovered he was really deaf Blush, but was actually could talk with you just fine as long as he could lip read you a bit. He turned out to be a lovely old boy... so, try saying hello to her again and making sure you are right in her field of vision.

If she still keeps ignoring you, yes, maybe she is just a bit obnoxious. Oh well, you can't win them all.

APotNoodleandaTommy · 07/10/2014 13:28

Nice rudeness from someone whose husband won't even wash Hmm

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/10/2014 15:35

Indeed!

kikisunflower · 07/10/2014 17:19

I'm forever blanking people if I don't have my contact lenses in and I'm slightly hard of hearing in both ears and I do daydream. Some people have been really rude to me about it saying I blow hot and cold when in fact I just can't see them or hear them unless they are stood right in front of me. I also get a bit claustrophobic during school pick up so get a bit anxious sometimes and my brain just doesn't register things properly when that happens. I know a few mums who feel the same and it's a friendly school so no one gets offended once they get to know you properly.

tiredoldmum · 08/10/2014 06:30

Maybe I hit a little too close to home to those of you who found my opinion rude? you know, being a bit too precious.

being so easily offended is a bad habit and is manipulative.

wowfudge · 08/10/2014 06:49

Oh come on - that's way off the mark tiredoldmum.

The OP is likely wondering what it is she has done to warrant no response to a polite pleasantry. Quite how you get manipulative from that, I don't know.

KatieKaye · 08/10/2014 06:57

It does sound as if there is a very good chance she is ignoring you.
If no hearing impairment etc then to blank a person who says hello is rude. Good manners cost nothing and help to make society a better place. Unlike a previous poster I do think that she owes you the courtesy of at least acknowledging your greeting. There does not have to be a reason for her rudeness, some people are just rude.

I'd just keep on saying hello with a big cheery smile.

MiddletonPink · 08/10/2014 07:09

There are people like that in the world. It's very strange. There's a mum at school like this. Face like a slapped arse. I say hello or smile and nothing. I've stopped doing it now, I just ignore her.

Mrsjayy · 08/10/2014 08:01

What a strange response tiredoldmum the op is just having a bit of a moan on a forum are you the mum ignoring her Grin

MiddletonPink · 08/10/2014 08:29

I think tiredoldmum is rude mother who blanks OP.

Mintyy · 08/10/2014 08:35

tiredoldmum - we don't speak to people like that on Mumsnet, not even on AIBU. Now I suggest you go and sit quietly in a corner and have a think about what you have just done. No cbeebies for you young lady until you come back and apologise.

yellowdinosauragain · 08/10/2014 16:25

Tiredoldmum I don't know maybe the reason people are commenting is actually because you're bloody rude Hmm The thread is so pointless that you've now posted twice? Right. I would respectfully suggest you get yourself a life instead.
