We bought a house with Ikea's freestanding units. They are not great, though I suspect a lot of it is down to the DIY fitting (lots of the house had been fixed up by previous owners and everything is a bit flakey). e.g. The hinges on a couple of doors are coming off, the chipboard has deteriorated and they can't be fixed.

I had an Ikea kitchen put in my old house, and bought one for this house 9 years ago and there's not a mark on it. I'm very impressed with the quality and value for money.

We had one in our old flat. The carcasses were all the same whether you got the expensive or cheap doors/worktops/fittings etc and were all guaranteed for 25 years. They were really easy to put together and install ourselves, we just got someone to cut the angle on the worktop. We got the cheaper doors too and they looked awesome.

MabelBee · 05/10/2014 18:57

The previous owners of our house installed an Ikea kitchen. I quite like the cupboards, apart from the open gap at the bottom instead of having skirtings, which just makes it harder to clean because all kinds of stuff ends up rolling underneath. And yes, they are peeling. And the carousels are flimsy.

I hate, hate, hate the appliances. Rubbish oven, annoying hob, shocking customer service when things go wrong.

MabelBee, sounds like you're just missing the footboards - you can but them and clip them on very easily... We have dark grey gloss under white gloss units

notoneforselfies · 05/10/2014 20:12

Sorry - kick board not footboard. Though ikea call them plinths. You wouldn't need to change anything about your existing kitchen, just add them in.

Love mine. Fitted in may this year and they look fine. Got my builder to fit them. He was impressed with the quality. Didn't like fitting them much because there are no guide channels so he had to drill them etc but that's it. He recommended our friends to get the benchmarx ones and they were £10k! Only thing I thought worth getting from there would be the drainer. Everyone who's been and seen our kitchen have been v impressed. £3k.

From what i hear from friends they the best kitchen to get. All those that have them love them. Far from Rubbish.

Maiyakat · 05/10/2014 20:18

Mine is great, apart from the weird under sink plumbing which is a bit of a pain. Definitely excellent value.

vdbfamily · 05/10/2014 20:22

We fitted our own Ikea oak kitchen and love it.Still going strong after years with nothing falling off!

LadyRabbit · 05/10/2014 20:29

I second those saying they go on and on forever. Plus if they look tired, just change the doors and update - the carcasses seem built to withstand Armageddon!

daisychicken · 05/10/2014 20:33

Our kitchen is 9years old with a couple of cupboards of about 7 years (decided we needed more) and all going strong and looking good. We also had a stainless steel sink which looks good but we do have leak issues with the pipe under the sink - it just doesn't fit quite right - so DH wouldn't have an ikea sink again for that reason BUT things may have changed. A friend in Denmark has all ikea appliances and loves them. We only have a small kitchen and managed to fit all the units (including the extras), sink, work top, doors and handles for £1000 - way cheaper than everywhere else we went to.

The ceramic butlers sink is very good value for money and looks great. Good size for bathing DS in too Grin. Agree the plumbing bits for the sink aren't great but our plumber just bought some stuff to use instead very cheaply.

KitCat26 · 05/10/2014 21:17

Love ours, it was so much cheaper than other makes, looks good and functions well. Only down sides are the sink does scratch easily and there is no service gap so a bit of a pain to fit. Our £35 worktop is still looking good though.
