To ask wtf is a healthy diet?

I think we eat well, lots of fruit and veg not as much meat as we used to as we prefer to get organic.
We make our own bread, make meals from scratch etc
Eat/drink whole fat things ie milk

I am worried though that somewhere we're doing it wrong as everything I read has conflicting views:
Lower sugar
Lower fat
Lower calories
Lower carbs
Lower fruit

You can't do all of them because you wouldn't end up being able to eat a fat lot.

Aibu to ask what is the definitive good diet and for some examples of a weeks food?

The eat as your GPs theory isn't what they eat now. It's what they ate before the world went food crazy. Pre WW2.

I don't believe a high carb diet is ideal. After all the high carb fad began in the 1970's 80's when we were all brainwashed about milk and grains.

yes most of us would agree with oddboots. I eat paleo and that involves loads of veg. I do eat eggs and I have fish most days but it is not a massive difference from that simple advice - eat food, not much, mostly plants. It is also fairly cheap if you don't eat much. Instead most people eat loads and get rather large.

You know that pre WW2 lots of people in the UK were hungry? Rationing actually improved the diets of many people.

Even those who worked (working class) tended to do manual jobs, where it was a constant struggle to get enough calories in to them.

And while I do 'get' the seasonal thing - I live in Scotland. My organic veg box in the winter is pretty grim - turnip, sprouts, cabbage and spuds. I'm not going to stop supplementing that with peppers, tomatoes, green veg, etc etc.

Watch out OddBoots; I said that earlier and it pissed some people off in a rather extreme way. I'm not sure why, as it seems pretty inoffensive. I quote BustyKate:

Jaz, apart from avoiding processed food, the jury is still out on the specifics of the optimal diet, I suspect there are as yet undiscovered factors at work ?

I learnt on the Spinning Babies website that you should drink plenty of fluids, but not milk, because that turns to cheese during digestion. Hmm

figgieroll the 'high carb fad' didn't start in the 70's and 80's. Have you seen what the wartime diet was, eg? The staples of the British diet were bread and potatoes, with a little bit of meat and some seasonal fruit and veg.The only fad that really started in the 70's was eating brown bread instead of white and margarine instead of butter.
I think some younger people have the wrong idea of what we used to eat. It wasn't all steak and roast beef or full English breakfasts every day. All those things were rare treats for many people.
We just have so much more choice nowadays, it's unbelievable really.

I've given up reading articles on healthy diets. They all contradict each other and this year's baddie is next year's goodie and the next year it's all changed around again.

I think learn to recognise when you're full, try not to eat too much between meals, and cook from scratch as much as possible is probably the way to go.

Actually my mother as a child did eat in that idyllic organic way a lot of people strive for nowadays. She grew up on a farm and all their meat and veg came from the farm, they milled their own flour and baked their own bread and hardly ever had to go to a shop to buy any food.
