To think my 88-year-old granny could operate a tablet?

It's my granny's 88th birthday this month. As I've just received a tax rebate and a bonus, I'd like to spend the extra money on a really lovely gift for her.

The idea behind a tablet: you'd never know my gran's age if you met her. She's very active, both in body and mind, and isn't one to shy away from something because, "I'm old".

She's never had a computer/any kind of very contemporary technology before. But, she is desperate to LEARN about how to use technology, i.e. she will have a go on family's smart phones/Kindles/iPads. She's seen things like Skype and Facebook, and is fascinated, because most of my cousins live far away now, and she's amazed that the rest of us can talk to them so easily using these things.

She's talked for a little while about getting herself a laptop, but I think a tablet would likely be a lot easier for her. I think she would mostly use it for social networking/Skype/reading the newspaper/shopping and watching catch-up TV.

To clarify, most of the extended family live on one street (small town), so I am very much on hand to give gran the help she will need to get started on it, and can be "on call" for any technology issues!

Personally, I think she will enjoy the fact that she is still "keeping up" with the rest of the world. What do you think? AIBU and crazy to think she could manage a tablet at her age, or should I stick with jewellery as a gift?

My gran is 91 and loves using other peoples' tablets. She doesn't have her own though. Great idea for a present though.

Absolutely go for it. I am devastated that my grandparents died before the internet took off. One in particular was agoraphobic and spent her life writing to pen pals and phoning radio shows. She would have ADORED the internet.

My grandmother is 94 and last year we all chipped in and bought her an iPad and paid for a year's basic broadband package

She Skypes us, uses Facebook so I can share photos of my children with her (although I now can't swear on FB as she tells me off), uses Iplayer and stuff like that.

She needed help to set it up, needs a bit of help with the App Store and every now and then mum gets a panicked phone call because she's done something to it and can't work out how to fix it, but she can use it fine

Gt an iPad, they were designed to be easy to use. Nice and big too. Make sure you get a chunky rubber case to make it easy to hold and carry.

I can't believe that 53 year old woman is so inept Smile

I'm just off with my iPad to visit 95 year old grandmother. We are going to FaceTime her daughter who lives far far away.

For her it's like some sort of crazy magic. She goes along with it and loves to see the distant family, but she's no idea what's going on at all. She couldn't operate it I think, but she has some early dementia and severe short term memory troubles, so not a good comparison for you.

My parents (83 & 87) got a tablet a little while ago and use it all the time. In fact my mum loves it so much she went out and got herself an iPad mini so she can carry it around with her

Joshuajosephspork · 05/10/2014 10:12

Oh, and they are not particularly tech savvy in other ways, only use their mobiles for calls, don't do texting, but will now FaceTime at the most i opportune moments, just because they can :)

Get her an I Pad. She will love it. It's the easiest of any technology. I should know. I am in my seventies and I LOVE it. She will e mail, use the web and download books which she can read in any size print. Games, art apps. You can paint, draw etc. and above all go on Mumsnet. The I Pad also takes great photos and family with sd cards can transfer photos to her I Pad via a little gadget that Apple sell for around £20. Also family can buy I Tune cards so she can purchase all sorts. Go for it. She will love it.

Jill2015 · 05/10/2014 10:21

Most definitely go for it! Lovely idea, and I bet she will love it.

HappydaysArehere · 05/10/2014 10:21

Ps to above. Agree about the case. One that turns I Pad off when closed and ready when she opens it. My daughter got a great one from Amazon for me. It's a "snugg".

I love this! My mum would be like that too. My dad wouldn't be as enthused, but she keeps up with stuff, the grandchildren show her stuff on iPods, iPads etc.

BertieBotts · 05/10/2014 10:25

iPads/tablets are so much more user friendly and easy to use from nothing than a computer. I'd go for an ipad if you can afford it, just because they're more universal, less complex and any instructions for an iPad she'll be able to access.

whois · 05/10/2014 10:27

My sister and I got one for our gran for her 90th! She is sound in mind and just a little unsteady on her feet.

We set her up with FaceTime and BBC I player and radio, and iMessage.

She loves it and it now looking up things on the internet.

HappydaysArehere · 07/10/2014 18:34

Please let us know how she gets on with it. Tell her lots of mumsnetters are excited for her. It will probably be the most wonderful present she has had for a long time.
You are a wonderful grandchild and she will think even more of this gift because it came from you.

BertieBotts · 07/10/2014 19:13

And send her on gransnet Grin
