To give up on tummy time?

I've been trying to do tummy time regularly with my 2.5 month old son since he was 6 weeks or so. He's never once made any attempt to lift up his head while lying on his tummy - when he was younger, he'd turn it just enough to faceplant and eat his sheets. Now, if he's in his crib, he just lies there and sucks his fist (and starts to cry after a few minutes). If he's on me, he falls asleep.

He is getting better at supporting his own head when he's propped in a sitting position or when he's being carried in the mei tai (which happens most days). I'll keep putting him on his tummy on me to try to prevent him from getting a flat head, but it seems pointless right now to continue with the tummy time in the crib / on the floor.

Dd hated tummy time. The ortho and physio she's under both told me the sling as good as tummy time.

No official tummy time when mine were babies but I did it dd1 was fine for a nano second then screamed, placed her on my chest either sitting up or lying down she preferred that but a baby will develop hed control regard less just stop if your baby is miserable.

Upright in the mei tai counts as tummy time - don't worry about it :)

MyGastIsFlabbered · 05/10/2014 12:55

A tip I learnt about tummy time is if you sit on the floor with your knees bent & pointing upwards & put your baby on your thighs on their tummy. That way they can look around but they're still on their tummy.

Another one whose baby hated tummy time.

She would scream and cry after about literally 30 seconds on her tummy right up until about 5/6 months old. (She was holding her head up perfectly ok when being carried about from 3 or 4 weeks old so we had no worries about neck strength) so i gave up on tummy time and just let her lie how she liked on the bed by me, on the sofa, on the floor ect. Then one day she finally rolled on to her tummy! It was at about 5 and a half months old. She would just roll back though. At 6 months to the day she sat unaided - and at just under 8 months she began crawling all around the house at great speed Grin

Dont worry about tummy time OP.

I was told being upright in a sling or whatever counts too. It's just any time spent lifting their head or exercising their core muscles.

Whoever recommended the pillow- for safety and to help prevent SIDS any kind of pillow should not be used under 12 months. I would much rather run the risk of a bit of head flattening tbh.

LittlePeaPod · 05/10/2014 16:24

You don't use it overnight. You only use it if you are around. So if baby is in the room with you.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 05/10/2014 16:27

Thats alright then. Im always wary of anything under or over babies heads

vichill · 05/10/2014 16:32

Dd hated it so didn't stress her out by persevering. Think its a bit outdated tbh and stems from the good old days of them lying in a crib for hours with a dummy. DD sat up at 4.5 months and rolled at 5 and walked by 10 months.

I don't think you need to bother frankly.

As long as you don't just leave him lying on his back all day which I'm sure you don't.

I don't think my dd liked it very much whereas my ds is quite keen. He is 7 months now though! He sleeps on his tummy so that might be something to do with it.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 05/10/2014 22:42

Tummy time is a hyped up way of saying "don't leave your child lying on their back all day". DD1 hated it. Kept trying, eventually gave up. DD2 hated it. Gave up immediately. DS, forgot to try. Turns out at five months he likes it from time to time.

Time sitting, in a sling, lying on you, all good.

Don't sweat it. Smile

'Tummy time'? Never heard of it before this thread. There wasn't any such thing when dd was a baby, and that was only 15 years ago...
